The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fonteny 1er Cru offers more a mix of red and black fruit on the nose compared to the Les Corbeaux. A subtle marine (kelp?) aroma develops in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, nicely weighted in the mouth with a fine line of acidity. This has more complexity and nuance than the Les Corbeaux at the moment, whilst the finish demonstrates a tad more flesh and persistence. Good potential but needs time. Tasted at the Domaine.

(from vines averaging 55 years of age, with some as old as 70): Healthy medium red. Complex, rather wild scents of raspberry, dark cherry, musky game and roast coffee, lifted by a violet topnote. Classic sauvage Gevrey premier cru, already displaying considerable sex appeal to its fruit, mineral and animal flavors. Not particularly fleshy but with no shortage of texture or concentration. Finishes with firm but fine-grained tannins and sneaky length and floral lift.

Juicy fruit initially and then some structure. Grainy texture. Needs time but the ingredients are there. (JR)
