The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Bel-Air 1er Cru has yet another appealing nose. It's quite an intense mixture of red and black fruit, iris and violet flowers. Neatly integrated new oak imparts a discreet modern sheen. The palate is smooth and silky with plush red fruit, vanilla and orange pith. This is a Gevrey that is predesigned to seduce and slips down the throat with ease. That said, it just needs a little more grip and "grunt", so this one may well drink best in its youth. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Vinous
Planted at higher elevation, next to Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. Cask sample. Deep cherry; red- and black-berried fruits, plush but ending with minerality and a salty finish. Finely structured. (MH)
