(50% new oak): Dark red. Musky, wild, soil-inflected scents of black raspberry, licorice and dried flowers, plus a hint of espresso. Then rich, sappy and enveloping on the palate, with a subtle stony underpinning to the lightly saline flavors of dark berries, strawberry liqueur and earth. A splendidly rich 2013 with terrific class and inner-mouth tension. Leaves the taste buds vibrating on the slowly building black fruit and licorice finish. A real iron fist in a velvet glove.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru is deeper in color than its peers. There is a slight reduction here but underneath lies some very fine raspberry and black plum fruit, though it needs to demonstrate more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannin and then it seems to run out of ideas towards the finish and finishes a little "uninspired." Hmm ... this is a Chambertin outclassed by some of Rossignol-Trapet's less revered crus at the moment. Though it remains a very fine 2013, it falls short of how I expected it to perform given its splendid showing in barrel. Tasted September 2016.

50% whole bunch. Scented and spicy. Not the richest Chambertin by any means but there is Chambertin character and firm ambition for the long term. (JR)

Peppery and deliciously fragrant. Red fruited and a herbal, stemmy freshness. Maybe even a note of orange. Supple, lively, elegant in the lighter style of the vintage with a long, cool, dry, peppery aftertaste. (JH)
