Tasting Notes and Scores

89.5 ST

Palish medium red. Aromatic, open-knit nose offers notes of cherry, rose petal and cinnamon. Tightly wound but not hard, with juicy, perfumed dark raspberry and floral flavors intensified by firm acidity and underlying minerality. Juicy, refreshing wine with riper tannins and more length than the Clos Prieur. I may be underrating this.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle has less fruit on the nose than the premier cru from J L Trapet tasted alongside. There seems to be a little stem addition underneath, with red cherries and cranberry leaf aromas, perhaps lean in style but still fresh and correct. The oak is not quite as well subsumed as others but maybe it just needs time. The palate is well balanced with fine tannin, red plum and cranberry notes to the fore with a soft landing on the easy going finish. This is a consumer-friendly Gevrey, one that is well-crafted. Tasted September 2016.

Like the Beaune Teurons, a little stemmy on the nose but not unripe. The fruit is darker in character but still lively. The tannins are dry and paper-fine, appropriate for the relatively lightweight but scented mid palate. I think at this level I'd like a little more concentration but it's all in balance. (JH)
