Tasting Notes and Scores
The 2013 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Faconnières comes from 70-year-old vines and includes 50% whole-cluster fruit. It has a more understated bouquet compared to Virgileâs other â13s from the appellation, but donât be fooled: this has superb delineation and focus, real mineralité underneath those broody black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin â an overarching structure here with a dash of black pepper judiciously sprinkled over the dense, fresh and vibrant finish. This is a superb example from the appellation and one of the domaineâs finest contributions to the vintage. Drink 2018-2038.

There is just enough wood present to warrant commenting on as it frames the softly reduced nose so I would strongly recommend decanting this if you're tempted for some reason to try a bottle young. The beautifully intense medium weight plus flavors retain a fine sense of delineation on the powerful yet focused finale that delivers superb length on the ever-so-slightly austere and very firm finale. I very much like this decidedly old school effort that should amply repay extended cellaring. One to look for provided that you have the patience to allow it at least 7 to 8 years of age. Drink 2025+.
