The 2019 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru is matured in one-third new oak. All de-stemmed, it has a beautifully defined, floral bouquet with fine definition, rose petal and incense aromas entwined with the fruit. The palate is well-balanced with slightly chalky tannins, almost sorbet-like freshness with a tang of brown spices and blood orange towards the finish. This is showing very well.

90-year-old vines – their oldest – gave just three barrels. Very small berries but great quality. Lots of rocks and calcaire. 33% new oak. Cask sample. Intense redcurrant aromas. Rather sumptuous. One could drink this tonight! Extremely seductive. Intensely aromatic with lots of sweet fruit inside a convincing framework. But nothing seems to be submerged. Red fruits – raspberry with even a hint of strawberry. (JR)
