Tasting Notes and Scores

89 AG

The 2011 Puligny-Montrachet Champ Gains is a pretty, approachable Burgundy to drink now and over the next few years. The flavors are nicely layered, and there is plenty of refinement in the glass, but the Champ Gains lacks some of the depth of the very best wines in the range.

(the first vintage for this wine at Jobard; made from vines in excess of 50 years of age): Ripe stone fruits and a note of caramel on the nose. In a rather opulent style, with rich peach and honey flavors that come across as a bit heavy. Finishes slightly bitter-edged. No tightly coiled spring here. Antoine Jobard did the pruning for these vines in 2012 but noted that considerable work was needed over the coming years to force the roots deeper and get fresher, more minerally wines.
