(29 hectoliters per hectare; this wine was scheduled to be blended the day after my visit; like the Brûlées, this vineyard was planted in the early 1960s, but the grapes here are a bit smaller, according to Mugneret; 50% vendange entier ): Full, dark red. Aromas of black cherry, licorice and chocolate, plus a touch of bitterness that suggests it's time to bottle. Densely packed but more backward than the Brûlées, showing less easy sweetness today. A broad, classically dry, elegantly styled wine with firm but fine-grained tannins coating the front teeth and a lingering violet quality.

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a very well defined bouquet with black cherries, raspberry and subtle violet scents. The oak is nicely integrated here, although there is a touch of brettanomyces. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fleshy and exhibiting fine depth with a bit of confit fruit on the vivacious, structured finish. This shows good potential. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

50% whole bunch. 30% new oak. From cask. Just blended. Deep crimson. Rich, almost mushroomy nose. Massively fruity with many layers and rich underneath. Very serious and charming. One of his fuller bodied 2016s. Long and peacock’s tail on the end. (JR)
