The 2013 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru has a lovely red berry, morel and sous-bois scented nose. It's authentic old-school Burgundy in the best sense of that expression. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit, a gentle grip with a saline, slightly ferrous finish and a liberal sprinkling of black pepper on the aftertaste. Not one for those seeking "bags of fruit", but...you'll soon finish a bottle.

Usually 30% new oak at the very maximum, but in 2013 they used hardly any. Bright crimson. Light but very flattering nose. Then masses of quite rich fruit. Very charming and expressive. Gorgeous in fact. Very persistent. (JR)
