Tasting Notes and Scores

93 WI

Perfumed aromas of rose petal, violet, mango and pineapple. Intensely flavored and penetrating; as vibrant and focused as this is, it's also wonderfully creamy in the middle palate, with a complete absence of rough edges. Compelling flavors of exotic fruits, toast and spices, plus a hint of caramelized banana. Very long and concentrated on the back end. An outstanding, utterly harmonious blend.

Aromas of crips orchard fruit, pear and apricot, mingled with hints of fresh bread and pastry, introduce the latest release of Gosset's NV Brut Grande Réserve, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy but incisive wine that's deceptively generous but also structured to reward some bottle age.

The citrus-colored NV Grande Réserve Brut—a blend of Chardonnay (45%), Pinot Noir (45%) and Pinot Meunier (10%)—shows an intense, ripe and aromatic yet vinous bouquet with white and delicate red fruit, floral, brioche and nutty expressions. Full-bodied, dry and very fresh, this is a firm, complex, finessed, fruity, round and stimulating cuvée with a good, tight and slightly salty finish. An excellent aperitif and wine for starters. Tasted from lot L7424113, August 2018.

The NV Brut Grande Reserve opens with a bouquet of chalk, slate and wet stones. It is a beautifully pointed, energetic wine endowed with gorgeous drive from start to finish. Red berries, dried flowers and mint are some of the nuances that inform the finish. This is Lot # L0428123. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2016.

A definite step up from the Brut Excellence. A lovely apple, minerally nose with a touch of chalk dust. Superb definition and clarity. The palate is minerally, quite primal with apple and kiwi on the mid-palate. Has greater persistency than the Excellence. Very fine. Tasted January 2006.

Grosset has fashioned a non-vintage Grand Reserve Brut offering pleasant, yeasty bread notes intermixed with spicy pears, apple skins, and grapefruit. Medium-bodied, crisp, and impressively-endowed, it should be consumed over the next 4-5 years. Importer: Palm Bay Imports, Boca Raton, FL; tel. (561) 362-9642. Reviewed by RMP

Chardonnay 46%, Pinot Noir 44%, Pinot Meunier 10% Toasty, roasted nut aromas with some apple and pear slices. Touch of spiciness. Crisp acidity, fine bubbles. Long finish.

A plump, oily champagne with tons of ripe apples and a fleshy Pinot flavour. It is only in the finish which is rich in mineral that one can detect the Chardonnay grapes. A wonderfully opulent standard champagne and always one of the best. With aging it gets filld with sweet almond and nutty aromas.

Beautifully balanced blend based on 2005. I preferred it to Gosset's current vintage champagne. Very nervy and muscular. Not too sweet, not too tart. Drink 2011-2015.

Chardonnay-based blend. Very slightly woody/cedary nose, almost a touch of dried flowers with a hint of bread. Refined and brilliantly fresh on the palate with sufficient dosage to bring harmony. Long and finely textured. (JH)

Empty bottle 1,045 g. 40% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, 20% Pinot Meunier. Champagne Gosset work with around 200 growers who, between them, have approximately 120 hectares, mainly around Épernay. Malolactic conversion was avoided. Each cru was vinified separately, with no filtration and aged on fine lees. Winemaker Odilon de Varine. Natural cork. TA 7.8 g/l, pH 3, RS 9 g/l. Vegan. Available in over 200 shops. Plenty of richness on the palate with complex, yeasty flavours and a fine mousse. Dosage seems rather high, making the wine taste a little saccharine on the finish. Seems very expensive for what is on offer – there are many better-value alternatives out there. (AWH)
