Tasting Notes and Scores
From an excellent vintage, especially for Pinot Noir, Gosset's golden-yellow 2006 Grand Millésime Brut (which blends 56% Pinot Noir with 44% Chardonnay and was disgorged after eight years on the lees) displays a deep, rich and fresh, very mineral bouquet. This is followed by a full-bodied, very complex and persistent palate with purity, finesse and great expression. This is a mouthful of a straightforward, well-structured and refreshing millésime with a long and pure, salty and stringent finish. This 2006 combines richness with purity, elegance with complexity, and finesse with a serious expression and length. A great Champagne indeed.

The 2006 Brut Grand Millésime offers more near term appeal than many Gosset Champagnes as the flavors show a good amount of complexity, while the contours are nicely mellowed. Hazelnut, savory herbs, anise, mint and dried pear meld into the generous, inviting finish. The typical Gosset energy is nicely balanced by the weight and soft, relaxed contours of a wine that is now nearly ten years old. Lightly honeyed and toasty notes round out the close. In 2006 the blend is 56% Pinot Noir and 44% Chardonnay from vineyards in Avize, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Trépail, Vertus, Ambonnay, Avenay, Aÿ, Chigny-les-Roses and Louvois.

Gosset's 2006 Grand Millésime Brut is still on the market, and the wine is very open and expressive by the house's standards, bursting from the glass with notes of crisp but sun-kissed yellow orchard fruit, pear, clear honey and warm biscuits. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, broad and creamy, with a fleshy, generous profile that's balanced by brisk acids and enlivened by a delicate pinpoint mousse, concluding with a subtly chalky finish.

Pinot Noir-based blend. A light dairy note, lemon curd on toast, strong autolytic brioche character and honeyed on the palate. Rich, mouth-filling and long. Almost chewy on the finish – lovely texture. Masses of sustained pleasure. (JH)

56% Chardonnay, 44% Pinot Noir. Pale straw. Already quite a bit of evolution on the nose – more than most 2006s. Lightly bready. Then reasonably sweet start tips it into brioche country. Agreeably medium level of fizziness and nicely dry on the end. Tight-laced finish. Nicely knit and at a good stage for current drinking. (JR)
