Hervé describes the enigmatic 1996 as ‘two wines in one glass’. Its nose - truffles and autumnal leaves - betrays its age; its palate is disarmingly youthful, due in part no doubt to the magnum format, the rapier like acidity which marked the year so famously dextrous and almost intrusive. Behind that calmer fruit notes, citric to start with, then riper; gorse, fennel and, for the imaginative, porcini mushrooms. Will it ever knit together completely, who knows? For now, it has the lure of an unfinished symphony. Tasted in magnum.

Savoury, exciting, complex nose with real lift. More evolved than most, but quite a strong impact. Dense, brisk, rewarding. Lots there – great concentration. (JR)
