Real excitement and energy here. The unique brilliance of this near vertical vineyard shines through in spades – a generous, inviting, richly-fruited core is balanced wonderfully by the zip, zest, and precision of the finish. Whistle clean and very nimble, this is a Goisses that will be delicious in relative youth but that also has all of the terrifically married ingredients to develop those wonderfully tell-tale mocha, toasted nut, and cocoa notes that are so appealing and downright delicious with requisite bottle-age. The 2005 Clos des Goisses impresses for its energy, focus and cut. The 2005 isn’t a huge Goisses, rather it is a Champagne that stands out for its tension, something that is quite rare in this vintage. Graphite, yellow stone fruits, slate, minerals and tropical-inflected overtones appear on the finish, adding further complexity and nuance with a dash of exoticism just to round things out. I will not be surprised if the 2005 blossoms into an even more complete Champagne with further time in bottle. This is the second vintage made in the new winery, which has allowed for better control of temperature and other variables.

Showing the girth of the vintage, this thrives on power more than finesse, not showing as much complexity at this stage than some of the others in the lineup. It’s creamy and marzipan-like, inviting for its generosity and it balances its flavours of dried apricot and candied peach with lively acidity and a pronounced chalkiness. It feels as if it could develop further and it may gain more refinement and poise with further ageing. Disgorged: November 2013.
