Tasting Notes and Scores

98 AG

The 1999 Sorì San Lorenzo is a modern-day classic. Freshly cut flowers, mint, chalk, bright red cherries and anise jump from the glass in a pure, crystalline wine endowed with magnificent tension and precision. Pulsating in the glass, the 1999 is all about energy and weightless precision. In that sense, the 1999 is a younger version of the 1982. -- Antonio Galloni, November 2014

Deep, saturated ruby-red. Brooding aromas of currant, minerals, tobacco, truffle and earth; strong aspect of medicinal austerity. Suave, bright and young; offers an uncanny combination of sweetness and powerful structure. Very rich, mouthfilling wine with even more power and thrust than the young 2000. Finishes with very fine, sweet tannins and outstanding persistence.

The 1999 Sori San Lorenzo, the darkest of its three siblings, is the most potent of all, with a big, alcoholic push which drives the tar, roses, plums, and toasted oak. It has sizeable structure and important intensity, the richness and depth of extract and the balance of power and finesse are those of outstanding grapes and winemaking. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020. Importer: Paterno Imports, Lake Bluff, IL; tel. (847) 604-89000

Offers spicy aromas of light cloves and cinnamon, with hints of fruit. Full-bodied, with firm tannins and a polished, silky finish. A little tight now. Racy and polished.—'99 Piedmont blind retrospective (2009). - JS

The opulence of 1997 combined with the backbone of 1996,' says Gaia Gaja of this vintage, and that seems about right. It's surprisingly closed and smoky on the nose, but the palate is fleshy and suave, offering a concentrated style with succulence and weight but also enough acidity to lift the finish. It's still youthful, but it's starting to drink well, with supple tannins on the long finish.
