The 2000 Costa Russi comes across as rich, dense and powerful, with impressive depth in its dark fruit. As always, Costa Russi is the most forward of Gaja’s single-vineyard wines from Barbaresco. The intensity of the fruit carries through nicely to the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020. AG

Deep ruby-red. Cool, sappy, deep aromas of black cherry, currant, minerals and licorice. At once generous and penetrating, with lovely clarity of currant and mineral flavors. Sweeter and deeper than the Barbaresco. Finishes with big, rich, dusty tannins (perhaps a bit more tannic than usual for this wine) and very good length.

The 2000 Costa Russi, for me, is no better than the Barbaresco, despite its intense nose and the larger impact of the oak. Intense and sustained, its fruit is a bit less fresh than the 2001 (or the 1999 version of this same wine) and the important concentration of the finish could use a bit more flesh and sweetness. Fabulous aromas of rose petals and cherries with hints of raspberries. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and an incredible finish. This is so fine and so long. A real beauty that grows and grows on the palate. Great Nebbiolo. Greatest Costa Russi ever, from 34-year-old vines. James Suckling
