Tasting Notes and Scores
The 2016 Barolo Parafada is fabulous. In fact, the 2016 is one of the best - if not the best - Parafadas I have ever tasted at Massolino. The natural richness of this site marries with the translucence of the year to produce a weightless yet powerful, highly nuanced Barolo that hits all the right notes. Dark cherry, lavender, spice, mint, rose petal and licorice develop in the glass, but it is the interplay of richness and lightness that elevates the Parafada into the realm of the truly sublime. I have never tasted a Parafada like this here. What a wine!

The Massolino 2016 Barolo Parafada is a rich and beautifully fleshed out wine that brings forth abundant aromas of dark fruit, Morello cherry, spice, tobacco, crushed stone and rust. This wine shows power and determination, and it definitely has the structure, freshness and inner fruit weight to go the long haul. Parafada is made with old-vine Nebbiolo (60 years old and more), and these results show stunning precision and care. The wine will age with confidence for 20 years or more. Congratulations to Massolino for this classic beauty. Some 5,200 bottles will be released in September 2020. ML

Black cherry and black currant fruit is embedded in a matrix of stiff tannins. Tar, tobacco and iron flavors add complexity, and the vibrant acidity is a force to be reckoned with. This red has fine length. Just needs time. Best from 2025 through 2050. 215 cases made, 75 cases imported. — BS

Now in the hands of the fourth generation, Massolino has slowly expanded its holdings, which include some of Barolo’s most hallowed sites. Purchased in 1958, the 1ha plot in Parafada comprises vines up to a century old on a steep, south-facing slope with very white chalky marl. The gorgeously fragrant nose of balsamic herbs, liquorice and pepper leads to a mouthful of mineral and stone with sweet berries in the background. Dense and powerfully structured with some fleshy fruit on its bones, this sophisticated Barolo should be tucked away for three to four years. Drinking Window 2025 - 2040
