Tasting Notes and Scores
Based in Serralunga and having built its reputation on top wines from Vigna Rionda, Massolino produces this Nebbiolo from vineyards above 300 metres on calcareous soil. 'In great years, only the fruit from the young vineyards - those up to 10 years old - is used, while in weaker vintages fruit which fails to express complexities which we consider to be sufficient to wear the Barolo label is added,' explained Franco and Roberto Massolino. A refined nose of wild strawberry and rhubarb root anticipates a firm palate with grainy, ripe tannins, crisp acidity, full body and a great savoury character of outstanding length. A baby Barolo in spirit, not without ageing potential. Drinking Window: 2021 - 2038

Part of Langhe Nebbiolo 2019 and 2018: top-scoring wines
Decanter
The Massolino 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo is a little ripe, with aromas of strawberry and dried raspberry. The wine is simple, primary and direct, but it ultimately lacks the nuance that you should expect of the Nebbiolo grape, even in an entry-level wine. The wine draws its fruit from various sites in Monforte d'Alba, Serralunga d'Alba and Alba (from a site with white soils). If I were to guess, fruit from the youngest vines are used to make this no-fuss wine. Some 40,000 bottles were made. ML
Wine Advocate
As much savory as it is fruity, this red reveals eucalyptus, thyme and tobacco notes married to macerated cherry, raspberry and mineral flavors. The finish is compact and gripping. Drink now through 2025.
