Tasting Notes and Scores
Settling into a phase of maturation, this powerful red offers floral, truffle, macerated cherry, leather and spice aromas and flavors. Sweet and balanced, with fruit, mineral and savory elements lingering on the aftertaste. Still youthful, this remains approachable, and should peak in a year or two. Best from 2015 through 2040. 200 cases made. (BS)

The 2004 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Ca d’Morissio is totally seamless and beautiful. It possesses gorgeous textural richness and finesse with virtually no perception of tannin. Rose petals, flowers, raspberries and mint come alive in the glass, but it is the wine’s subtle yet insistent chalky minerality that is the thread that holds the wine together. This is a hugely impressive Barolo with a bright future. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2034. (Antonio Galloni)
Wine Advocate
(bottled barely ten days prior to my visit) Good medium red. Sexy, wild aromas and flavors of strawberry, mocha, coffee and minerals. Intensely flavored, fat and sweet, perhaps more concentrated and voluminous than the "regular" Monprivato as this is 100% from the michet clone, which typically produces smaller berries. There's an almost flinty, smoky minerality to the lush flavors of wild red berries. Finishes long, round and full, with layered, thoroughly ripe tannins. I would not be at all surprised if this merited a 95-point score eight or ten years down the road.

Good full red. Wild, reduced nose shows red raspberry, strawberry, porcini, underbrush and a whiff of baked bread; not for the faint of heart. Then lush and sweet but not particularly forthcoming, with the wine's funky leather and animal notes blocking its fruit. I find the tannins a bit dusty and dry, and the notes of caramel, mocha, mushroom and earth make me wonder where this can go. Not perfectly clean; did this spend too long in oak? Mascarello told me it was bottled in 2009, while the 2006 was bottled in 2012. Drink soon unless you're a necrophiliac.
