Tasting Notes and Scores

88 AG

2000 La Spinetta Barolo Campe—A weighty and rich wine, that is soft and round (for a Barolo) with lots of sweet fruit, tar, and mint. It is a wine of considerable size but there just isn’t enough complexity going on here to justify a higher score. The wine remains heavy, flabby, and lacks the necessary acidity to bring it into balance. At times, I sensed an awkward herbal note in this wine. 88 points/drink now- 2015 A side-by-side tasting of the 2000 and 2001 vintages of the Barolo Campe was very telling. Rivetti says 2000 is a vintage for people who aren’t used to drinking Barolos, or who don’t usually like the wines, but I think he is underestimating the palate of most consumers. When the two wines are tasted side by side, the 2000 disappears, and the 2001 is clearly, at least to me, the more nuanced, complex, and compelling wine

Wow. This is really an explosion of fruit on the nose, with masses of crushed strawberries, toasted oak and cedar on the nose and palate, and a hint of fresh herbs. Full-bodied and very chewy, with lots of ripe tannins and a ripe fruit finish. Exciting. This is the first wine from famous Barbaresco producer La Spinetta from 20 acres in the Barolo region. Best after 2010. 2,665 cases made. (James Suckling)

The 2000 Barolo Campe, the first which Rivetti has made, is very fresh and vigorous for a wine from this hot vintage, spicy and balsamic in aroma with much tar and chocolate as well, dense flavors, much length and intensity, and a sizeable but supple close. Already quite approachable, it will last another decade and a half. A Marc de Grazia Selection, various American importers, including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel. Good deep medium red. Roasted, smoky nose hints at menthol. Fat, large-scaled and powerful; comes across as sweeter than the 2001 but less refined, despite possessing solid underlying minerality. Showing more shoulders today than the 2001. Finishes with lovely ripe tannins and excellent breadth.

(the Rivettis' first vintage of this Barolo, from a large vineyard in Grinzano Cavour) Tangy, perfumed aromas of red raspberry, rose petal and spicy oak. Juicy and highly concentrated, with pungent oakiness, coffee and minerals. Already offers captivating inner-mouth perfumne. Finishes spicy and long, with strong oak-powered tannins.
