Andrea and Chris Mullineux are a formidable husband and wife team who met at a wine festival in Champagne while both doing harvest stints in France. Andrea – who grew up in California – heads up the cellar and winemaking side of the business and works with an incredible precision and attention to detail, while South African Chris is the viticulturist and responsible for sales and marketing. They have become world-famous for their single terroir range, which shines a spotlight on two of the Swartland’s most prestigious varieties: Syrah and Chenin Blanc.

Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines were one of the original four pioneers of “The Swartland Revolution”, and the pair started working with Swartland fruit in the early 2000s. In 2014 they bought the spectacular Roundstone Farm on the southwest side of the Kasteelberg, from where they had been sourcing Syrah for almost a decade – and spent the following three years building a new cellar and expanding the plantings. The new vines have been planted along the contours of the land, to minimise erosion and capture as much rainfall as possible, amid natural corridors of fynbos (the native South African shrub-like vegetation).

Tasting Notes and Scores

93 WS

Tightly coiled, with an alluring velvety feel, showing notes of raspberry sauce and blackberry juice at the core. Violet perfume and juniper accents add to the charm as this persists on the finish. Give this a few more years to start showing its best. Best from 2022 through 2035.

The 2017 Granite Syrah needs a little encouragement from the glass to reveal scents of blackberry, raspberry coulis, fennel and gravel. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, grainy tannins and a fine bead of acidity. There is a satisfying salinity throughout this Syrah, and a pleasing brightness on the finish. Excellent winemaking here, and I suspect this will age with style.

Structured on the nose, the 2017 Granite Syrah has a black-fruited core with classic black pepper notes and hints of oak. The wine is still tightly wound on the palate, with dusty blackberries and a mineral tension to the mid-palate. Soft black pepper tones coupled with grippy and fine-grained tannins linger on the long finish. Not yet released, this wine shows tremendous aging potential.

Deep, dark-fruited but elegant Syrah nose. Delicious combination of dark, fine fruit and super-dry tannin texture, smooth but dry. Extremely elegant and well-proportioned. (JH)
