Andrea and Chris Mullineux are a formidable husband and wife team who met at a wine festival in Champagne while both doing harvest stints in France. Andrea – who grew up in California – heads up the cellar and winemaking side of the business and works with an incredible precision and attention to detail, while South African Chris is the viticulturist and responsible for sales and marketing. They have become world-famous for their single terroir range, which shines a spotlight on two of the Swartland’s most prestigious varieties: Syrah and Chenin Blanc.

Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines were one of the original four pioneers of “The Swartland Revolution”, and the pair started working with Swartland fruit in the early 2000s. In 2014 they bought the spectacular Roundstone Farm on the southwest side of the Kasteelberg, from where they had been sourcing Syrah for almost a decade – and spent the following three years building a new cellar and expanding the plantings. The new vines have been planted along the contours of the land, to minimise erosion and capture as much rainfall as possible, amid natural corridors of fynbos (the native South African shrub-like vegetation).

Tasting Notes and Scores

96 DR

Iron comes from the Malmesbury side of the Swartland and is the broadest, richest and most structured of the three Mullineux soil Syrahs, with lots of extract and concentration, bloody, meaty intensity, top notes of whole bunch spices and a hint of stony reduction. (Tim Atkin MW)

A beautiful, elegant red, with milled white pepper and fresh rosemary notes, which are abundantly fragrant on the nose but more subdued on the palate, plus pure accents of ripe black raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, orange peel and dark chocolate. Reveals fine, silky tannins, which emerge to firm the mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2033. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Beginning with a floral grip, the 2019 Iron Syrah offers a seductive nose filled with red flowers, wild raspberry and dusty cherry as elegant spice tones waft from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, the wine has a fine mineral tension and firm, rocky tannins that lift the mid-palate. As the tannins loosen, the wine uncoils in the mouth, leading to a food-friendly and delightfully fragranced finish. This was made with 100% whole-cluster Syrah, and the wine rested for one year in 50% new French oak. It's delicious! 3,300 bottles produced.

The 2019 Syrah Iron is a little tighter and more backward on the nose compared to the Schist and Granite, revealing more of a marine influence with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with good structure, a little more savory in style than the aforementioned cuvées and maybe not quite as cohesive on the finish. I might broach this sooner than the others based on this showing.

Savoury – good maturity here. Very fine tannin, long and a great example of how good this quality level is at Mullineux. No hurry to drink. (AWH)
