Tasting Notes and Scores

98 RP

The 2004 Aalto PS is expressive aromatically, on the palate this voluptuous wine reveals elegance combined with power.
Large in scale but light on its feet, it has beautiful balance, density, and concentration. It can be enjoyed now but should evolve for 12-15 years and drink well through 2050.

Wine Advocate

Expressive and intense, this impressive red marries elegance and power, delivering rich flavors of blackberry, pomegranate, dark chocolate, mineral and spice over ripe, firm tannins. The texture is as smooth as velvet, the finish long and sweet. - winespectator.com, November 2007

Wine Spectator

Compared to the previous wine, there is a faint but pleasant stalky element to the nose, blackberry, a touch of liquorices and saddle-leather.
The palate is rich and opulent with very ripe tannins, leading towards a meaty, savoury finish that just lacks a little grip but has a silky texture. The acidity seems just a little low to me. Drink 2010-2020. Tasted January 2007.

Harvest started 27 August, as in 2017. ‘It’s as if this came from another vintage’, says winemaker Phillipe Bascaules, because the drought of September missed them because of the harvest date and they missed the hydric stress that the reds faced, so they were able to keep the freshness. Easier to explain the freshness of the whites than that of the reds, he suggested. pH 3.1. Barrel sample.
Subtle oak spice and mealy, creamy notes from the barrels but also beautifully fragrant citrus and blossom on the nose, making the palate all the more remarkable in its incredible fruit intensity. Amazing intensity and freshness at the same time. Concentration but with this salty aftertaste. Mouth-watering. Succulent and so full of pure, fragrant citrus, almost a touch of apricot. Really aromatic on the palate too. Both sweet-fruited and salty giving very good balance. Mealy, almost savoury on the final salty finish. (JH) 13.5%
