2005 Vega Sicilia, Unico, Ribera del Duero

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2005
Region: Castilla y Leon, Ribera del Duero
% Alcohol: 14.00

The wines of Tempos Vega Sicilia are recognised for their other-wordly quality and character. They produce several wines, including the great value Pintia from their Toro estate and Macan from their Rioja vineyards, but the focus is on Ribera del Duero and the Tinto Fino grape - the Ribera iteration of Tempranillo. Here they produce their entry-level Alion, a hugely popular wine made for earlier drinking, Valbuena, a high class red aged for 5 years in barrel and bottle before release, and two wines under the Vega Sicilia label: Unico, produced from a single vintage and aged up to 10 years before release, and Unico Reserva Especial, made from a blend of three Unico vintages and released once a year. Characteristically Vega is quite different to anything else. It is defined neither by length nor breadth; nor by fruit, nor structure, by power or by freshness. Somehow it manages to combine all these in a way that is reminiscent of great Bordeaux but with a unique and effortless sense of untapped energy rumbling underneath. The very fact that it ages so magnificently, and yet can be approached at almost any time during its life, is testament to its balance. Under winemaker Gonzalo Iturriaga de Juan, Vega has arguably never been better and he brings to bear his extraordinary ability to ‘tame’ the wild nature of Ribera de Duero with incredible skill and precision. His tannin management is among the very best anywhere in the world creating a sense of structure and power and yet always allowing the fruit and freshness to take centre stage.

(fermented in large oak tanks and aged for six years in new French and American oak barriques) Saturated ruby. Explosively perfumed aromas of fresh ripe red fruits, floral oils, pipe tobacco and incense take on sexy vanilla and woodsmoke nuances as the wine opens up. Densely packed yet shockingly lithe on the palate, offering intense cherry liqueur, red currant and spicecake flavors given spine by a core of juicy acidity. Shows superb energy and clarity, finishing sweet, smoky and extremely long; velvety tannins add gentle grip. - Josh Raynolds, vinous.com, May 2017

Vega Sicilia note that this vintage, like 2006, needed an additional two years ageing in bottle to present itself at its best. On the nose it promises power, on the palate there a layers of redcurrants and cherry compote. Beneath that lurks notable dryness. Still seems young with that energetic tannin grip. Give it time. Dry winter, dry spring, hot summer bringing an early cycle, before a healthy, early harvest. Yield 25hl/ha. One and a half years in new oak, one year in used barrels, then about two and a half years in large-format tanks. 93,553 bottles, 2,391 magnums, 146 double magnums and six Imperials. Tasted from magnum.

2005 was a powerful year, and the wine was kept for longer in bottle and released two years later, after 2007 and 2008, which were more challenging years that produced more delicate wines. On those bases, by the time the 2005 Único was released, it was highly anticipated. The wine is indeed big, powerful, concentrated and quite tannic, but it's also very good. However, it does not reach the finesse of the 2004. Curiously enough, the warmer years seem to have lower alcohol, and this, like 2009 and 2011, wears a 14% on the label. 2,391 magnums were filled in June 2011. Artwork José Guerrero.

Neal Martin had already tasted the 2005 Único in 2012, before I joined The Wine Advocate, but then they released 2007 and 2008 before and the 2005 has been kept until now, as they thought the vintage required some more time in bottle. It's mostly Tempranillo with some 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak vats and aged for almost six years in 225-liter French and American oak barrels and 20,000-liter oak vats. The extra time in bottle has helped the wine to develop its bouquet, and it feels very aromatic and open, with the classical Vega Sicilia perfume of yesteryear, earthy, leafy and spicy, even if they wine was kept because of its power. It's still powerful, but at the same time it's elegant and has a polished mouthfeel and fine-grained tannins. 93,545 bottles, 2,391 magnums, 146 double magnums and six imperials produced. It was bottled in June 2011. Next year they will release the 2006, and the following vintage to be released in 2019, will be 2009. Further than that they don't know, as the only newer vintage in bottle today is 2010 and they are about to bottle 2011 now. Luis Gutierrez (Wine Advocate #228, Feb 2017)

After the relatively understated 2012 and 2011, this pushes all the buttons: intense meatiness, dark chocolate, black cherry, leather, granitic aromas – much like Hermitage? Maybe I refer everything to Rhône … but who cares when it's this good? (RH)

All new oak. Deep leathery garnet with bricky rim. Sweet and leathery on the nose. A hint of undergrowth but still has a surprising amount of fruit. Super-sweet in its fruit and gentle decay, with finest of tannins, just a very fine grain, and that leathery finish. There’s a firm grip even though the tannins are resolved. Deep and firm and incredibly long. Still very much a promise though delicious now. So long. A little more earthy and less elegant than the Reserva Especial and more muscular. (JH)
