2006 Vega Sicilia, Unico, Ribera del Duero

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2006
Region: Castilla y Leon, Ribera del Duero
% Alcohol: 14.00

The wines of Tempos Vega Sicilia are recognised for their other-wordly quality and character. They produce several wines, including the great value Pintia from their Toro estate and Macan from their Rioja vineyards, but the focus is on Ribera del Duero and the Tinto Fino grape - the Ribera iteration of Tempranillo. Here they produce their entry-level Alion, a hugely popular wine made for earlier drinking, Valbuena, a high class red aged for 5 years in barrel and bottle before release, and two wines under the Vega Sicilia label: Unico, produced from a single vintage and aged up to 10 years before release, and Unico Reserva Especial, made from a blend of three Unico vintages and released once a year. Characteristically Vega is quite different to anything else. It is defined neither by length nor breadth; nor by fruit, nor structure, by power or by freshness. Somehow it manages to combine all these in a way that is reminiscent of great Bordeaux but with a unique and effortless sense of untapped energy rumbling underneath. The very fact that it ages so magnificently, and yet can be approached at almost any time during its life, is testament to its balance. Under winemaker Gonzalo Iturriaga de Juan, Vega has arguably never been better and he brings to bear his extraordinary ability to ‘tame’ the wild nature of Ribera de Duero with incredible skill and precision. His tannin management is among the very best anywhere in the world creating a sense of structure and power and yet always allowing the fruit and freshness to take centre stage.

Tasting Notes and Scores

98 RP

I tasted the 2006 Único again, and it's clearly the best Único produced in the last few years, to which I don't find much logic, as on paper 2004 and 2005 were better years in Ribera del Duero. However it is, the 2006 is a fantastic modern Vega Sicilia in the making, powerful and clean, still very young and marked by the élevage with a whiff of American oak and a creamy texture in the palate. It should age very well for a very long time. I'd wait to pull the cork, even if it's drinkable and quite showy already. This is the current vintage in 2018, even if the 2007 and 2008 were released before it and even before the 2005. In 2019 they will release the 2009. 93,993 bottles, 2,552 magnums, 165 double magnums and six imperials were produced.

Saturated ruby. An amazingly complex array of red and blue fruit preserve, spice and floral scents is accompanied by suggestions of incense, pipe tobacco, coconut and candied licorice. Utterly stains the palate with impressively concentrated yet lively, smoke- and spice-laced cherry compote, blueberry, fruitcake and violet pastille flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Sappy and broad on the endless finish, which shows outstanding thrust and dusty tannins that are absorbed by the wine's densely packed fruit.

The 2006 Único has always been a bit of a mystery to me, as I always felt it transcended the vintage character, and this magnum was not an exception. 2006 was very warm, but the wine remains fresh and has a moderate 14% alcohol. It has some grainy tannins, but it's really very good. 2,552 magnums were filled in June 2012. Artwork by Antoni Tàpies.

Like 2005, this Único was bottle aged for an additional two years. In this vertical tasting, this is the first of the younger wines to reveal maturity, both in paler colours and in the aromas. The maturity shows through in the mouth, acidity peeking through, masking some fruit, with a rasp of tannin and firm oak. Delicate and very long. Cold winter, warm spring, early flowering, early ripening and a harvest interrupted by showers. Yield 25 hl/ha. One and a half years in new oak barrels, one year in used barrels, then about two and a half years in large-format tanks. Bottled June 2012. 93,993 bottles, 2,552 magnums, 165 double magnums and six Imperials.

100,000 bottles. It has an extra energy and depth. Cocoa, vinosity, an elegant earthy touch and fully integrated wood. It is all elegance and softness. It flows smoothly in perfect balance. I'm surprised that it's really approachable now. (FC)

94% Tinto Fino, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Warm spring led to early flowering, with high temperatures in late August and early September resulting in early ripening. Picked both at the beginning (starting 9 September) and end of September because of rain in the middle. Bottled June 2012: 93,993 bottles, 2,552 magnums, 165 double magnums and 6 Impériales. Bottle-aged for two additional years. From magnum. Dense dark garnet with some evolution at the rim. Now this is a mature nose! With notes of menthol. Dry, appetising, rather majestic finish. Very much a food wine with a slight lack of juice in the middle. Kick of freshness and lift on the mid palate. (JR)

Incredibly floral and beautiful with dark berry, spice, cedar and mint. Chinese plums. Asian spices. Bark. Tea. Full body, dense and so soft and complex. The finish goes on for minutes. Endless and fine. January 2017 release. This reminds me of the gorgeous 1991 or 1964. Drink forever. A wine that you want to spend time with.
