2007 Vega Sicilia, Unico, Ribera del Duero

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2007
Region: Castilla y Leon, Ribera del Duero
% Alcohol: 14.50

The wines of Tempos Vega Sicilia are recognised for their other-wordly quality and character. They produce several wines, including the great value Pintia from their Toro estate and Macan from their Rioja vineyards, but the focus is on Ribera del Duero and the Tinto Fino grape - the Ribera iteration of Tempranillo. Here they produce their entry-level Alion, a hugely popular wine made for earlier drinking, Valbuena, a high class red aged for 5 years in barrel and bottle before release, and two wines under the Vega Sicilia label: Unico, produced from a single vintage and aged up to 10 years before release, and Unico Reserva Especial, made from a blend of three Unico vintages and released once a year. Characteristically Vega is quite different to anything else. It is defined neither by length nor breadth; nor by fruit, nor structure, by power or by freshness. Somehow it manages to combine all these in a way that is reminiscent of great Bordeaux but with a unique and effortless sense of untapped energy rumbling underneath. The very fact that it ages so magnificently, and yet can be approached at almost any time during its life, is testament to its balance. Under winemaker Gonzalo Iturriaga de Juan, Vega has arguably never been better and he brings to bear his extraordinary ability to ‘tame’ the wild nature of Ribera de Duero with incredible skill and precision. His tannin management is among the very best anywhere in the world creating a sense of structure and power and yet always allowing the fruit and freshness to take centre stage.

Tasting Notes and Scores

They have kept 2005 and 2006 for now, and they are releasing the 2007 Único from a lighter vintage that is accessible already; they will even sell 2008 before 2005 and 2006. 2007 was a cold vintage in Ribera and it produced lighter, fresher wines (perhaps not as problematic as 2008, but there was also frost in 2007). The wine might be a tad lighter than other vintages, but it's more structured than 2008; it combines elegance and power, is nicely balanced and should be able to develop in bottle for many years, although the quick evolution of the bottle once opened made me hesitate about its drinking window. Let's hope I'm wrong. 80,000 bottles produced. - Luis Gutierrez (eRobertParker.com)

Bold, with earthy, meaty and floral aromas. Intense, balsamic palate, the alcohol seems more apparent here. Powerful and spicy with a concentrated finish. Say Vega Sicilia’s notes: ‘it is not a famous vintage, but it is one that identifies the region and style of the house. It is, in one word, elegant.’ It certainly is true to its terroir, though I might argue with the word elegant at present. Warm spring, ‘abnormally cold’ summer'; technical director Gonzalo Iturriaga calls it 'a really complicated year'. One and a half years in new oak barrels, one year in used barrels and about two and a half years in large-format tanks. 74,975 bottles, 3,107 magnums, 156 double magnums and 11 Imperials. Tasted from magnum.

The 2007 Único from magnum showed much better than expected, as 2007 was very challenging. The wine showed concentrated and quite tannic, from a powerful year with 14.5% alcohol after a rainy season and an unusually cold summer. It was produced with Tinto Fino and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 3,107 magnums produced. Artwork by Francisco Javier Rodríguez Quesada.

Vivid ruby-red. Spice- and mineral-accented redcurrant, cherry, cured tobacco and candied rose on the highly perfumed nose. A juicy, sharply focused midweight offering lively red fruit and floral pastille flavors and earthy suggestions of chewing tobacco and succulent herbs. In a graceful, energetic style (due to the cool vintage, no doubt), with strong finishing cut, resonating floral character and velvety tannins coming in late to add shape and grip. A successful wine for the vintage, no question.

This is in a much happier space than the 2012 and 2011 in terms of development. It expands on the palate, with gorgeous fruit and earthiness and lingering meat juice. Long, long finish. Only just ready! But already showing its magnificence. (RH)

95% Tinto Fino, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Abnormally cool summer with frost on 24 September; harvest 6–17 October. Aged 14 months in large wooden vats following an 18-month ageing process in new wooden barrels, 8 months in used casks and 24 months in large-capacity wooden vats. 74,975 bottles, 3,107 magnums, 156 double magnums and 11 Impériales. From magnum. Blackish crimson. Sweet and glowing but the tannins are pretty present! Quite hard work at the moment. (JR)
