2001 La Rioja Alta, 890 Gran Reserva, Rioja

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2001
Region: Rioja
% Alcohol: 13.50

Alongside neighbouring producers Muga, CVNE, and Lopez de Heredia, La Rioja Alta sit at the top table of Rioja producers, crafting exceptionally complex and delicious wines at an accessible price point. Nothing is rushed here with extended barrel and bottle ageing for their top wines. Whilst they are released to market when ready to drink they still have years – decades in a top year – ahead of them, with further complexity and haunting aromatics to be discovered. Their key wines are Vina Ardanza, and the Riojas 904 and 890. Vina Ardanza is the bodega’s ‘Burgundy’ styled wine, hence the Burgundy bottle shape, and was created in 1942; however it changed fundamentally in 1999 when a newly purchased vineyard at higher altitude became its source of fruit. La Rioja Alta’s Gran Reserva 904 was named to celebrate the merger of La Rioja Alta and the Ardanza winery in 1904 – hence the numerical moniker. The 904 Gran Reserva brings the ideal combination of rich fruit and oak influence that so characterises the classic wines of this region. Made on average just 4-5 times a decade, it is certainly one of the leading lights of Rioja. 890 is the flagship Gran Reserva, being almost entirely produced from Tempranillo (904 is up to 10% Graciano) and 6 or more years’ ageing in oak versus 4 years for the 904.

Tasting Notes and Scores

2001 is a great vintage for all the wines from La Rioja Alta but the long-awaited 2001 Gran Reserva 890 is otherworldly. 2001 was a slow maturing vintage which produced smaller grapes especially in the old vineyards on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria in the villages of Brinas, Labastida and Villalba where the vineyards that make it into this wine are located. The final blend contains a majority of Tempranillo with 3% Graciano and 2% Mazuelo. The wine ferments with the natural yeasts attached to the grapes in stainless steel vats and is aged for six years in used American oak barrels with 12 manual rackings. A selection of the best barrels were blended together and bottled unfiltered in March 2008. Only 15,000 bottles were produced. It shows (even) younger and more concentrated than the 2004 904, a darker shade of red and a somehow backward and reticent nose (relatively speaking) of forest floor, cold bonfire, antique shop, truffles, game, sandalwood, nutmeg and clove. The fruit is also a little darker and the palate more austere, but still showing vibrant and supple, with clean flavors and a great finish. This is my favorite modern time 890. Bravo! Drink 2016-2026. La Rioja Alta has tremendously improved its wines in the last few years while keeping faithful to the most classical style. They have always been hugely popular in Spain, but they seem to be selling their wines faster and don’t produce every cuvee in every vintage and as a result had very few new wines to show. Vina Ardanza jumped from 2001 to 2004, and the next vintage will be 2005. Followers of traditional Rioja are very lucky as both the 904 as the 890 coming on the market are from great vintages and are superb. Bricky garnet but looks no older than the 2004. Less aromatic than the 2004, sweeter smelling – still some red fruit and vanilla though there are mature aromas too. Denser and longer and altogether more sensual than the 2004. Long and elegant and fully mature but with plenty of life left on a plateau of maturity. (JH)

This looks deceptively modest from the label. Shaded ruby with black highlights. Very rich and intense with some gaminess. Real intensity. Served slightly cool, it did not show itself to the max but this is pretty special stuff. (JR)
