2005 Muga, Prado Enea Gran Reserva, Rioja

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2005
Region: Rioja
% Alcohol: 13.50

Bodegas Muga is one of our favourite producers. There’s so much that is good about the Muga enterprise: they continue to purchase vineyards, taking their total holdings to over 350 hectares, as they firmly believe that contract growers cannot deliver the same quality fruit as those which are estate-owned; they still produce their own barrels on-site, even personally choosing their own trees from specific French forests; and they continue to walk the perfect line between modern methods and traditional style. They are arguably the most dependable – and dependably impressive – producer in Rioja. Whilst they make a range of wines encompassing traditional and modern, our favorites are the Gran Reserva Prado Enea, perhaps the finest traditional-styled Rioja in our range, and the more polished Aro.

Tasting Notes and Scores

The 2005 Prado Enea Gran Reserva spends 36-months in oak, nine months in new oak after which it is racked into American oak that is “semi-new” (i.e. a new barrel that is “broken in” with a wine beforehand). It has an unashamedly opulent bouquet of primal, ripe, boysenberry, mulberry, dark chocolate and crushed violets that blossom with aeration. The palate is full-bodied with crisp acidity cutting through the pure blackberry and cassis fruit. It has wonderful focus and intensity, though the finish demonstrates convincing composure. This is an outstanding Gran Reserva whose silky texture will instantly win you over. Drink 2013-2030+

80% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. Chocolate, black fruit, poised and broad; has the physique of a boxer but the balance of an acrobat. Traditional Rioja flavours with serious structure. (RH)

Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, Graciano. Historical and leading Haro winery dating back to 1932, the vineyards for Prado Enea are situated in Sajazarra (Rioja Alta) and were planted in 1976, they are the last to be harvested. Moderate yields (4,200 kg/ha). Wild yeasts, 20 days fermentation/maceration, 12 months in big oak tanks followed by 36 months in barrel. Prado Enea is produced only in great vintages. Rioja integrated style. Deep but delicate nose showing coffee, cacao, pencil lead, cloves and leather. Concentrated palate with a dominating woody character, good quality oak, tannins are still to be mellowed. It has a good future ahead and can be a good wine to bet on. Leathery finish. The 2005 is a little less classy than the great Prado Enea 2004. (FC)
