2004 CVNE, Imperial Gran Reserva, Rioja

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2004
Region: Rioja
% Alcohol: 14.00

CVNE, the Compañía Vinícola del Norte del España (the Northern Spanish Wine Company), was founded in 1879 in the town of Haro in Rioja by two brothers. Today the estate is still controlled by the direct descendants of the founding family. Since its inception, CVNE has been focused on the production and aging of high quality, distinctive wines and includes three wineries: Vina Real, Contino and Imperial. All three wineries have distinct philosophies, styles and are run as separate entities. Vina Real was created by CVNE in the 1920s to showcase the stunning fruit from the vineyards of the Rioja Alavesa, north of the River Ebro which runs through the centre of the region. Its blend of traditional and modern is best captured by the remarkable new winery, opened in 2004, which sits atop and deep within the hill of Cerro de la Mesa in Laguardia. Created in 1973, Contino represents the first ‘chateau’ concept in Rioja where the grapes come entirely from a single estate, where the wine is also made, aged and bottled. The history of the property however, dates from the 16th century. The “contino” was the officer in charge of a garrison of a hundred soldiers who protected the royal family de contino” from the time of the Catholic Monarchs onwards. Imperial is one of the true reference points in the history of Spanish winemaking, a true classic in Rioja first bottled in the 1920s. Its name was originally adopted after a special bottling for the English market known as the ‘Pinta Imperial’ or ‘Imperial Pint’ (just over half a litre). The grapes to make Imperial have always come from their own 28 hectares of vineyards in Villalba (Rioja Alta), and selected vineyards in the nearby communes of Briones and Montalvo, where the vine age is kept to a minimum of 20 years to maintain quality. This is the beating heart of Rioja and truly is a wine to stack up with the greats from France and Italy

Tasting Notes and Scores

Firm and a bit austere, this red shows depth and drive, with chewy tannins supporting plum, tobacco, licorice and mineral flavors. The structure is solid but the wine remains fresh. Maturing now, this has a long life ahead. Drink now through 2024. 4,000 cases made. - winespectator.com, September 2013

The 2004 Imperial Gran Reserva is 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, and 5% Mazuelo aged in new French and American oak for 24 months. Deep crimson-colored, it gives up aromas of toast, spice box, espresso, blackberry, and plum. Medium to full-bodied, on the palate it displays a plush texture, ripe flavors, excellent volume and concentration, and a relatively forward personality. It will be approachable in 2-3 years and will offer prime drinking from 2013 to 2024. Compania Vinicola del Norte de Espana (C.V.N.E.) is known colloquially to most Spanish wine drinkers as Cune. The company was founded in 1879 by the Real de Asua brothers and still remains in control of their direct descendants. In the 1920s ownership started Vina Real and in 2004 a new winery was built in Laguardia. In 1973 Contino was created to further the concept of the single estate winery and has since been one of the principal leaders in the resurrection of the nearly extinct Graciano grape. The Contino wines are made exclusively from the estate’s 253 acres located in Laserna near the town of Laguardia. The Reserva bottling is the mainstay of the Contino lineup produced from vines ranging in age from 25 to 60 years. The Contino Vina Del Olivo is the product of a dry farmed single vineyard of the same name planted in 1980. The blend is 90% Tempranillo with the balance Graciano and Carinena aged in new oak for 18 months. The Imperial label is affixed at C.V.N.E. only in the top vintages. Excellent year – enough rain, quite a lot in fact in early Sep. Very deep purplish crimson. Dense and opulent and very modern. Lots of acidity. Mulberries, not especially obviously rioja. Gorgeous but far too young to contemplate. Tannins very well managed. (cask sample) (JR)

2004 was a classic year; 'everything was right'. This wine was the hand-count favourite of the (very large) room. Surprisingly dark. The first sign of age after wines going from 2018 to 2009. The first hint of leather, of raspberry treacle. Quite closed. Miso and chicken-stock-cube savouriness, saltiness and intensity. Quite blocky and less length. Chunky tannins. Iodine and blood and then red (dried cherry?) intensity peeping through. Very aromatic and fragrant resin on the end. Perhaps I am a Rioja heathen; I did not find this nearly as elegant, ethereal, evocative, as other vintages. It was too hot-climate Syrah-like, too patriarchal, too dominant, fist-on-the-table emphatic, no nuance. But it certainly makes a statement. (TC)
