2015 Abreu, Las Posadas, Howell Mountain

David Abreu is the gold standard of viticultural practice in California. The majority of the great modern Napa wineries (planted from the 1980s onwards) have David’s name on them; from planning to execution to maintenance, nobody does it like David. Over the years in the process of seeking out and planting sites for wealthy, passionate and top-quality minded future vineyard owners, David has found a few special sites - some of which he keeps to himself. Abreu farms around 80 acres of vines in 4 prime locations throughout the Valley: Madrona Ranch and Capella, both of which are found in and around the town of St Helena (around two-thirds of the way up the Valley at the foot of Spring Mountain), Thorevilos, which is a collection of hillside plots to the east of the other sites level with St Helena, and Las Posadas which is further up the hillside on Howell Mountain. Words can hardly describe the natural beauty of these vineyard sites. Of these sites only a tiny fraction is actually reserved for David’s own label wines – the rest are sold to the biggest and greatest names of the region for the highest grape prices in Napa. David’s winemaker is Brad Grimes. This trained chef has worked across the spectrum of David’s business but his naturally calm, analytical but creative mind led him to winemaking. Brad’s task is to make sure the finished wines express the unique sites on which these incredible grapes grow.

Tasting Notes and Scores

98 JD

The 2015 Las Posadas comes from an estate vineyard on Howell Mountain that lies at 2,000 feet in elevation, above the fog line. This singular effort has a flamboyant, mineral-laced bouquet of black and blue fruits, forest floor, camphor, chocolate, and exotic flowers, and is an incredible expression of this mountain terroir. With great, great intensity, beautiful purity of fruit, and again, this savory, mineral-driven character, it has enough tannins to warrant 2-4 years of bottle age and will keep for 4-5 decades. This cuvée is 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Cabernet Franc, 14% Petit Verdot, and the rest Merlot and Malbec.

The 2015 Las Posadas is another fabulous wine from Abreu. Here the richness of the vintage softens some of the typically angular young Howell Mountain contours. Even so, there is plenty of Howell Mountain character. Naturally, the 2015 is quite primary today, but it is also immensely promising.

Abreu is now calling his vineyard on Howell Mountain (a tract of 33 acres with 15 planted) Las Posadas, after the road high on the mountain that seems to be the Fifth Avenue of Howell Mountain vineyard sites. The seamless 2015 Las Posadas Proprietary Red nearly redefines opulence, extravagance, and intensity in its haute couture style. A candidate for perfection, the wine has notes of fruitcake, licorice, black truffle, forest floor, spring flowers, and black fruits that literally soar from the glass and continue across the palate with a cascade of earthly delights. This is a magnificent, almost chillingly perfect wine that has to be tasted to be experienced.
