2015 Abreu, Madrona Ranch, Napa Valley

Colour: Red

David Abreu is the gold standard of viticultural practice in California. The majority of the great modern Napa wineries (planted from the 1980s onwards) have David’s name on them; from planning to execution to maintenance, nobody does it like David. Over the years in the process of seeking out and planting sites for wealthy, passionate and top-quality minded future vineyard owners, David has found a few special sites - some of which he keeps to himself. Abreu farms around 80 acres of vines in 4 prime locations throughout the Valley: Madrona Ranch and Capella, both of which are found in and around the town of St Helena (around two-thirds of the way up the Valley at the foot of Spring Mountain), Thorevilos, which is a collection of hillside plots to the east of the other sites level with St Helena, and Las Posadas which is further up the hillside on Howell Mountain. Words can hardly describe the natural beauty of these vineyard sites. Of these sites only a tiny fraction is actually reserved for David’s own label wines – the rest are sold to the biggest and greatest names of the region for the highest grape prices in Napa. David’s winemaker is Brad Grimes. This trained chef has worked across the spectrum of David’s business but his naturally calm, analytical but creative mind led him to winemaking. Brad’s task is to make sure the finished wines express the unique sites on which these incredible grapes grow.

The 2015 Madrona Ranch is an extreme wine endowed with magnificent density and textural richness. Crème de cassis, menthol, lavender, spice and violet are some of the many notes that blossom as the wine builds into a crescendo of aromas, textures and flavors. The 2015 is going to need a few years to drop some of its baby fat, but that won't be much of an issue, especially as the 2015 won't be released for at least a few years.

Pure perfection in a glass, the 2015 Madrona Ranch is more elegant and finesse-driven than the Cappella, yet doesn’t give an inch with regard to power, richness, and length. Coming from a site just outside of St. Helena at the base of Spring Mountain, this beauty is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, 11% Petit Verdot, and 2% Merlot. Insane notes of blackcurrant and blueberry fruits, truffle, gravelly minerality, forest floor, and exotic flowers all emerge from this full-bodied wine that has everything you could want from a glass of wine. Full-bodied, thrillingly textured, seamless, and with incredible intensity, it one of those wines where you run out of adjectives trying to describe it. In short, this is a perfect, legendary wine from this awesome winemaker and vineyard.

As for the 2015 Madrona Ranch, there are 20 barrels of it, which is essentially 500 cases of wine. A wine of surreal richness and intensity, with an opaque blue/black/purple color, the wine smells awesome, with notes of charcoal, camphor, incense, graphite, blackberry, cassis and possibly some floral undertones. Unctuously textured, thick and juicy, with an energized mouthfeel despite its massive fruit and extract, this is an incredible effort and one that will age for 35-50 years.
