Saturated opaque ruby. Vibrant, multidimensional aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, roast coffee, licorice and iron; has the slightly medicinal austerity of a barrel sample of a topnotch Margaux. Dense, thick and sweet, but quite high-pitched owing to bracing acidity. Strong note of violet. Conveys a powerful impression of soil tones. Despite the strong acids, this comes across as wonderfully lush and sweet. Very long finish features dense but utterly sweet tannins. A Monte Bello with great potential.

The 2000 Monte Bello exhibits a briary, rustic bouquet, with notions of grilled meat, cigar ash and leather complementing its rich blackberry, cassis and plum fruit. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and supple, with an ample core of succulent fruit, melting tannins and a long, savory finish. It's drinking beautifully today, especially with a decant (which helps to integrate this Monte Bello's wild side). The product of a cool September, the 2000 is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc that attained 13.4% natural alcohol.

The 2000 Monte Bello is a rather rustic rendition of this cuvée, with aromas of grilled meat, cigar ash and leather complementing the notes of wild plum and loamy soil that so often distinguish this cuvée. On the palate the wine is quite fleshy, supple and open knit, and it's drinking well now.

75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Half bottle. Seamless nose, fresh, great life and in great condition. Impeccable class and neatness. Vaguely herby – but not ‘green’ – just enough to lift. Chewy (qua satisfying), substantial, but tannins are beautiful , no hard edges at all. Proves how the best of California have become such good value versus bordeaux of equal quality. (AH)
