"Quite the bottle here!" 98-Point Cos Party Formats for Easter Feasting
Continuing our admiration of the oft maligned and much misunderstood 2017 vintage in Bordeaux, we are delighted to offer a number of large formats one of the vintage’s definite successes, the esteemed Second Growth Chateau Cos d’Estournel.
“2017 is a vintage where extraordinary wines possessing great depth and super ripe, super-fine tannins can be found, achieving ripeness at modest alcohol levels… a genuinely gorgeous anomaly in our modern times.” LPB
Those chateaux that avoided the worst of the frost damage and managed to harness the positive elements of the growing season were rewarded with exceptionally healthy grapes that have turned into fine-boned wines with mid-palate weight a warmer climate brings, framed in sweet, filigree tannins that are immediately appealing already yet augur well towards a rewarding future.
“When I taste a wine that is, apparently against the odds, an incredible achievement, it fascinates me no end to study the how and the why. […] Here is a wine of incredible grace and depth, which should unfurl slowly, over many years, offering excellent cellaring potential.” LPB
Lying just over the Pauillac-St-Estephe border, a stone’s throw from Ch Lafite, Cos d’Estournel boasts one of the Medoc’s finest terroirs and most enigmatic chateaux, its architecture harking back to its connections with 19th Century India. 2017 was a transformational year for the chateau, as Aymeric de Gironde, who had instigated a new refined quality to the wines (cf. the multiple 100-point awarded 2016), jumped ship (to Troplong) during harvest. His legacy has, however, persisted and the 2017 is testament to a new styled Cos that prioritises purity over extraction, balance over weight.
