Sena was originally a joint project of Eduardo Chadwick, owner of Errazuriz, and the Robert Mondavi empire. Since the demise of Mondavi, Sena is entirely under the control of Chadwick. The fruit is sourced from Sena’s biodynamically farmed vineyard with the 2007 Sena made up of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Carmenere, 12% Merlot, with the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It puts forth an enthralling bouquet of sandalwood, underbrush, exotic spices, incense, floral notes, blueberry, and blackcurrant that borders on kinky. Already remarkably complex on the palate, with layered flavors, a plush palate feel, and precision balance, this beautifully rendered offering will evolve for another 6-8 years and provide a drinking window extending from 2016 to 2032. The 2007 Sena has a lovely ripe bouquet of blackberry, blueberry and graphite that is well defined and still youthful. This shows far more purity than the older vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, ripe tannins, fine balance and more minerality towards the finish. This has the precision that I would seek in a top icon wine. Drink 2014-2025. Sena is the peripatetic wine that goes around the world challenging and, let it be said, often defeating First Growths in blind tastings. I will not enter into a discussion about that here, although it must be said that Sena is an impressive wine. Tasting through this mini-vertical from almost the first vintage, I did find a distinct improvement from 2007 onwards. While I understand that older vintages have their share of plaudits, I discerned more complexity and vitality as well as finer integration of oak on newer vintages, as if more thought had gone into the wines.
