Errazuriz, Las Pizarras Chardonnay, Aconcagua

Colour: White
Vintage: 2021
Region: Aconcagua

Las Pizarras is one of Errázuriz’s most exciting recent projects. The Pizarras wines come from specific plots – the grand cru sites – of Errázuriz’s estate in the Aconcagua Costa, which is less than 12 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean. The cooling influence of the ocean, the diverse aspects of the various plots, and the well-drained soils with their high level of slate, result in a Chardonnay and Pinot Noir which have high natural acidity and nervy tension and significant complexity, intensity and stony minerality. Slate is “pizarras” in Spanish and thus the wines are named after their slate-rich terroir.

Tasting Notes and Scores

98 JS

Punchy minerals cut through the creamy lemon and limey citrus, almost like licking wet stones! Some green apples, too. Steely, with a hint of white flowers and white almond. Very transparent and vertical but this is not a typical full-bodied chardonnay, it is rather linear, tense and electric. Sharpened minerality lingers in a lengthy, mineral finish. An extremely gastronomic and mouthwatering chardonnay. Drink now or hold.

The 2021 Las Pizarras Chardonnay is stunning, with amazing parameters, 12.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.07 and 8.63 grams of acidity that gives it an austere profile, elegant, vibrant, mineral and pure, extremely clean, chiseled and symmetric, with an effervescent palate and the intensely mineral and salty character that defines the best vintage of this wine. The full clusters were pressed and the juice fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels, where it matured for 12 months. This is a wine with full development of aromas and flavors, subtly nuanced (marzipan, pear, white flowers) with very integrated oak and stunning precision, finishing very dry. Delicate and elegant. It's among the finest vintages, with less power than 2015, vertical and with good structure, more Chablis than Meursault. Superb! 8,900 bottles were filled in June 2022. LG April 2023

The 2021 Chardonnay Las Pizarras hails from Aconcagua Costa, specifically a vineyard located 7 miles from the ocean planted in slate soils. It was aged for one year in 400-liter French oak barrels, 1/3 of them new. The nuanced nose presents green apple and linden-blossom notes with hints of aniseed, mint and cedar over a bed of hazelnut. In the mouth, the vibrant acidity and faintly creamy feel set the tone accompanied by a chalky, saline texture adding energy and tension before the long, bold finish. JH June 2023
