As a youngster in the wine business, I used to drink this when I was feeling flush. Now it looks like an absolute bargain as the quality is so amazing; let's not forget this is from the family that make Clos Apalta, a multiple 100-pt wines from nearby vineyards. Lapostolle Wines was founded by Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle and her husband Cyril de Bournet in 1994. After visiting Chile, Alexandra and Cyril not only fell in love with the Colchagua Valley, they also saw the huge potential of the area for producing top quality wine thanks to the geographical location and climate. In the creation of Lapostelle wines the family's aim is as simple as it is ambitious: to create world class wines using the French experience and the magnificent terroirs of Chile. The Apalta Vineyard is located in the wine-producing region of Colchagua Valley, 200 km south-west of Santiago, 68 km away from the Pacific Ocean, between the Andes mountain range and the coastal cordillera. Apalta is nestled between the Tinguiririca River, a tributary of the Rapel River, and cordons of the Coastal Cordillera that ends in a horseshoe shape. The positioning of the vineyard not only enjoys fantastic sunshine but also allows excess heat to escape, a huge benefit for an area home to a hot climate. They own 370 hectares in three different vineyards (Casablanca, Cachapoal and Colchagua) and produce a total of 200,000 cases annually. Under the dedicated vision of Alexandra and Cyril, Lapostolle Wines has been a pioneer in the wine industry in Chile and today its wines continue to elevate the region through the production of premium wines, with a strong emphasis on sustainability. They are recognised throughout the world for their quality and extraordinary ability to express the Chilean terroir.

In 2019 Andrea León achieved superlative results at Clos Apalta with a blend of 64% Carmenere, Cabernet Franc and Merlot aged for 25 months in French barrels. This is a luxurious red with an aromatic profile of liquorice and black and redcurrant over layers of graphite, clove and cinnamon. In the mouth, the breadth and freshness are brought together by the silky texture which flows into an enjoyable finish with refined tannins.

The 2018 Clos Apalta is 64% Carménère, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Merlot from Apalta, Colchagua, aged for 24 months in 85% new barrels. The ripe, complex, clear nose offers prune, blueberries and blackberries along with pepper, tobacco, rosemary, cigar box and a whiff of smoke. Creamy and broad in the mouth with good volume, a firm flow and contained structure. The tannins set the tone while the mellow freshness underlines the sugary profile. A genuine Michel Rolland wine made during a year of subtle flavors.

Full of character and depth, stretches out as it opens. Higher alcohol than the estate’s 2nd wine Le Petit Clos, but you feel it less in this wine because there is so much at play here. Complex and confident, with a flood of flavour; extremely muscular and intense but you get salinity and juice that keeps up the pace, running along- side the fruit from start to finish. Tight tannins, needs a few years in bottle.

64% Carmenère, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot. Deep ruby colour, with a spicy, leathery nose full of cool but ripe cherry and blackcurrant fruit. There is a touch of vine tomato, but this adds complexity and character without detracting from the fruit. The palate is luscious with dark-cherry fruit. The oak is sweet but measured, as are the fine, ripe tannins. There is just enough bite to leave a fresh impression on the long, black-fruited finish. Fine. (TP)
