Tasting Notes and Scores

92 JS

Fresh and rich with lots of sweet tobacco, spice and cooked plum character. Full body, velvety tannins and a clean and bright finish.

James Suckling

91 WS

Ripe and fleshy, with lots of roasted vanilla bean and fresh espresso, followed by dark, winey cassis and blackberry fruit. An intense licorice edge and a solid, tarry finish imparts drive. JM

I tasted the 2010 Belgrave several times and found it less impressive than I had hoped it would be, since I wrote it was a sleeper of the vintage from barrel. Nevertheless, the wine is still excellent. Dark ruby purple, slightly austere and closed, but exhibiting some tobacco leaf, black currant, vanillin, spice and earth, it should drink nicely for 15 or more years. Drink: 2013 - 2028

(90-93 pts)
2010: One of the finest Belgraves I have ever tasted, this sleeper of the vintage boasts an opaque purple color along with abundant aromas of blackberries and cassis, a classy mid-palate, medium to full-bodied flavors, superb depth and crisp freshness as well as liveliness. Over recent years the large negociant firm of Dourthe has been making improvements and resurrecting the quality of this forgotten Medoc classified growth. The 2010 will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring and should keep for 15 or more.

Wine Advocate

The 2010 Belgrave has a generous and nicely detailed bouquet with plenty of red berry fruit laced with brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, slightly more on the austere side with a classic tobacco-tinged finish and impressive persistence. This is worth seeking out. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the BI Wines & Spirits 10-Year On tasting.

16.5 JR

Deep crimson. Refreshing, zesty nose. Nicely balanced with good tannin/acid balance and already giving classic, if not outstanding, claret pleasure. Tannins on the way out and fresh, if slightly dusty, fruit. QGV
