2013 Chateau Cheval Blanc, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2013
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
% Alcohol: 13.00

Cheval Blanc has long been one of Bordeaux’s most consistent wines. Separated only by a ditch and a road from Pomerol, Cheval has always had a unique style of its own. Neither typically St. Emilon nor Pomerol in character, Cheval Blanc is Cheval Blanc, says Robert Parker. This is thanks in part due to the unusually high proportion of old vine Cabernet Franc used in the wine and unquestionably to the skills of Pierre Lurton and his team who have taken the quality and consistency of this incredible estate to remarkable new heights. In recent years though they have really been on fire, with dynamic young leaders at the helm, a new state-of-the-art cellar and a string of the most consistently highly-scored vintages of virtually any wine in Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes and Scores

94 JS

This is has a very beautiful structure and length for a 2013. Full to medium body, ultra fine tannins and a long and lively finish. Impressive. Racy and refined. Tight still. Better in 2018 but pretty now.

James Suckling

One of the best of the lineup, this has supple tannins, nuanced raspberry and redcurrant fruit, with lift and juice through the finish. Still an early drinker with higher acidity than in most years of this wine, but one that is worth seeking out and enjoying, with just a hint of the magic of these soils. 60% 1st wine with the rest divided into 20% Petit Cheval, with 20% declassified.

Restrained at first, with a subtle tobacco leaf hint, this expands steadily and forcefully in the glass, revealing layers of warmed fig, macerated black currant and blackberry coulis fruit woven with notes of ganache, warm gravel and freshly brewed black tea. There's power in reserve, but this remains elegant overall. A great effort. Best from 2018 through 2028.

Medium garnet colored, the 2013 Château Cheval Blanc has a captivating, open-knit nose of roses and lilacs over a core of fragrant soil, charcuterie, kirsch and raspberry preserves plus a waft of stewed plums. Medium-bodied, chewy and with tons of spring to its step, the palate is delicately fruited with an earthy finish.

(a roughly 50/50 blend of sauvignon blanc and semillon): Bright straw color. Aromas of smoky herbs, lime peel, and jalapeno pepper speak clearly of a higher sauvignon blanc presence than in the Virginie de Valandraud. Rich and expansive, with citrus zest flavors complicated by a bracing peppery quality as well as strong suggestions of pink grapefruit and passion fruit. Finishes very bright and dry, with floral and mineral notes emerging.

There is a lot to like in the 2013 Cheval Blanc. Sweet red berries, crushed flowers, mint, pomegranate and bright floral notes meld together gracefully. The mid-weight style of the year is evident, but there is good energy in the glass. Silky, polished tannins round out the persistent, supple finish. The 2013 is 52% Cabernet Franc and 48% Merlot. Production will be around 45,000 bottles as opposed to the more typical 75-80,000.

The final blend of the 2013 Cheval Blanc is 53% Cabernet Franc and 47% Merlot. It is a light- to medium-bodied, but stylish, perfumed, complex wine exhibiting hints of forest floor, raspberries and underbrush in a gentle, nicely textured style that builds incrementally in the mouth. Attractive fruit and substance give the wine more completeness than many of its peers. Administrator Pierre Lurton compares it, in a positive manner, to the style of the 2001, but I do not think it has quite the richness of that vintage. Nevertheless, this is an early-maturing, easygoing Cheval Blanc to drink in its first 10-12 years of life. Drink 20014-2026.

Notably pale, almost ruby. Light, sweet nose. SO laid back! Obviously they decided not to push this wine in the winery and it gives the impression of sort of 'take it or leave it' but it has an amazingly impressive fresh, long finish. Very distinctive. (JR)

Noticeably paler than the 2016 and 2015. Lighter in style with a weak-willed nature in comparison to the greater vintages. Yes, it might be earlier drinking, but it isn't showing the terroir to its best by any means. Suffers by comparison. (RH)
