Chateau La Conseillante, Pomerol

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2017
Region: Bordeaux, Pomerol

Chateau La Conseillante scarcely needs an introduction. A family estate, it has been under the ownership of the Nicolas family for 151 years. Situated on the famous plateau of Pomerol, it spans 12ha with the estate property remaining unchanged since 1753, besides a small addition in 2014 of a tiny parcel call La Gravette (bordering Vieux Chateau Certan).

The style of La Conseillante is not lacking in hedonistic Pomerol silkiness, yet always maintains a sense of restraint and freshness. In recent weeks both the 2019 and 2020 vintages have taken up a lot of airtime in Bordeaux circles, and rightly so. These are both great vintages for the long-haul. At Bordeaux Index we also love to find the wines that are best to drink right now. Of the run of vintages from 2015-2021, while other vintages might be quite closed, 2017 is the vintage giving a lot of drinking pleasure today. These are such charming wines, with open-knit tannins which are starting to reach their stride. The 2017 Chateau La Conseillante is quite simply addictive and bursting with rich cherry flavours. Keep the other recent vintages in your cellar and open the 2017s tonight!

Tasting Notes and Scores

97 RP

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 La Conseillante sashays out of the glass with the most gorgeous notes of lilacs, Black Forest cake, kirsch and black raspberries plus nuances of cinnamon stick, dark chocolate and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a firm, finely grained texture with bags of perfumed black fruits and wonderful freshness, finishing very long and very fragrant. LPB March 2020

The 2017 La Conseillante is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps with notions of black and red cherry preserves, fresh black plums, and mulberries, plus hints of aniseed, Jasmine tea, and fragrant earth. Medium-bodied, elegant, and lively in the mouth, it has intense red berry and floral layers, finishing with a minerally lift. LPB June 2022 - The Wine Independent

The 2017 La Conseillante is a regal wine. Lithe and statuesque in the glass, La Conseillante soars with real vertical intensity. Sweet floral aromatics and silky tannins give the 2017 much of its understated, classy personality. Inky dark blue/purplish fruit, spice, licorice and lavender develop with a bit of time, but it is the wine's balance and extreme sense of harmony that stand out most. Technical Director Marielle Cazaux gave the fruit about 2 days on the skins, with no SO2 at crush. Cazaux added that the malos were quite fast. The blend is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Frost reduced production by around 15%, while drought further reduced yields in the Franc by a further 10%. This is a fabulous showing. Martch 2020

Sophisticated, sexy and fresh, the wine is lenient and silky. There is a strong violet sensation along with black cherry, boysenberry, truffle and dark chocolate. The wine is classic in style but in a virtuous way. There is depth and volume. On the palate, you'll experience sweet, bright, fresh, dusty, chocolate-covered plums. The harvest took place September 5 to September 9. The wine was made from blending 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, reaching 13.5% ABV with a pH of 3.65. Tasted April 2018

A wine compared to the 2001 by winemaker Marielle Cazaux and showing beautifully both from barrel and now bottle, the 2017 Chateau La Conseillante is a classic, elegant wine from this estate that does everything right. Revealing a deep purple hue as well as terrific notes of creme de cassis, black cherries, crushed violets, camphor, and a hint of licorice, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a bright spine of acidity, silky tannins, and a balanced, incredibly classic style. Give this complex, complete Pomerol 5-7 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following two decades. Tasted twice. The blend is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc and comes from the estate’s 11.8-hectare vineyard of mostly gravelly clay soils (there’s some sand as well as iron), and the aging spans 16 months in 70% new French oak. The 2017 is a selection from 70% of the total production. Marielle Cazaux has unquestionably raised the bar at this estate, which is now nearly always producing one of the top wines in the vintage.

A young red with sweet fruit and very fine tannins, which have a creamy and almost salty sensation. Medium to full body. Blackberries, dark chocolate and bark. Some black tea, too. It shows an energy and tension. The creamy tannins give polish and beauty.

Softly nuanced aromatics with gorgeous floral notes and fine aromatics. This is less structured and with a cooler vintage character than the vintages of either side of the 2017 but there is so much pleasure to be had here, finesse, personality, salinity, but there is also concentration here as it opens; Lovely wine easily one of the highlights of 2017 vintage. 70% new oak, 30% one year barrels. Harvest September 5 to 29. A year where much of Bordeaux was impacted by frost, but here at La Conseillante they lost just one small plot at the bottom of the vineyard, leaving yields of 34hl/ha. Beautiful, silky-smooth Pomerol from the sought-after 'plateau' area. Beautifully ripe, pure, clean, soft but delineated - precise and not at all heavy. Gorgeous weight, pure and intense plum, a lovely density and texture with an explosive fruit opening leading into beautiful mineral earthy mid palate. Pretty raspberry tones on the finish. Gorgeous. - April 2018

The 2017 La Conseillante suffered a touch of frost on the Cabernet Franc and was bottled 5 and 6 June. It is impressive on the nose with blackberry, boysenberry, truffle and bay leaf aromas. I appreciate the delineation and focus of this Pomerol. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm, slightly chalky tannins at the moment. It is not a deep nor powerful La Conseillante, but it has plenty of character and charm, reflecting the growing season and the vineyard. It just finishes a little curtly like many 2017 Pomerols, but it should flesh out with bottle age. It's probably bad luck that this is sandwiched between the 2016 and 2018 but hey, you cannot choose the year you were born. www.vinous.com
