2005 Ducru-Beaucaillou 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2005
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Julien
% Alcohol: 13.00

The vineyards at Ducru run almost down to the Gironde, lying between those of Beychevelle to the north and Latour, in the commune of Pauillac, to the south. This highly regarded St. Julien is one of Bordeaux's true aristocrats with a history of wine making heading back to the mid-fourteenth century. Given a deuxiemes cru classification in 1855, the château is rightly held in similar regard to the neighbouring Leoville estates. However it is the modern era (post 1990 and particularly in the 2000s and onwards) that is really becoming the defining period for Ducru Beaucaillou. Since 2008, it carries an average Wine Advocate score of 95+, a sure sign that this is a winegrower at the very top of his game. Compound this reputed estate with its flamboyant, charismatic estate manager Bruno Borie and you have a winning partnership. Packing bundles of passion into each vintage Robert Parker comments that “Bruno Borie has done a remarkable job at Ducru Beaucaillou…if you haven't noticed yet, it's time to jump on the bandwagon.

Tasting Notes and Scores

98 JD

The 2005 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is still stunning, with an incredible bouquet of ripe currants, spicy herbs, tobacco, and smoke, with a kiss of savory flowers in the background. Rich, full-bodied, and powerful on the palate, it has nicely integrated tannins, a layered mouthfeel, and awesome length on the finish. It's just now at the early stages of its prime drinking window and has another 30 years or so of prime drinking.

One of the wines of the tasting, 2005 feels like an older style with hints of cigar-box, a touch of lead-pencil and leather suggesting this has moved nicely into the tertiary stage. Glossy blackcurrant fruit is still to the fore, with plenty of acidity to keep the wines fresh on the palate. Concentrated and with great length, the tannins (often firm and drying in many 2005s) are elegant, fresh and ripe. Will still be drinking beautifully in 15+ years.

The 2005 Ducru Beaucaillou is a 10,000-case blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot (they used to produce 18,000-20,000 cases). It is an exceptionally powerful wine with a dense purple color, superb intensity, and a beautiful, sweet nose of spring flowers, raspberries, blueberries, graphite, and creme de cassis. Full-bodied with fabulous concentration, exceptionally high tannin, good acidity, and massive layers of richness that build incrementally on the palate, this monumental effort is more structured than their outstanding 2003. It may be the finest wine produced at this estate since the 1982 and 1961 Ducrus. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2050.

Deep garnet colored, the 2005 Ducru-Beaucaillou needs a little coaxing before slipping sensuously out of the glass with the most alluring perfume of red roses, kirsch, star anise, cardamom and fragrant earth over a core of blackcurrant pastilles, blackberry preserves and warm plums plus a touch of tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a wonderfully taut, tightly knit frame of fine-grained tannins and bold freshness supporting the densely packed fruit, finishing long and perfumed.

Tasted at Farr’s Ducru-Beaucaillou dinner at the Ledbury. Consistent notes: this is a fantastic Saint Julien that is built for the long haul. The bouquet is tightly coiled with ebullient dark fruits, sandalwood, macerated black cherries and a hint of vanilla emanating from the unresolved new oak. The palate is full-bodied with sinewy tannins, wonderful harmony with the same ethereal sense of symmetry as the 2000. The finish is still tannic and almost “brutish”; so do not think about opening this wine before 2020. Tasted October 2010.

(contains a relatively high percentage of merlot, in the range of 30%) Good deep ruby-red. Wonderfully sweet, aromatic nose combines currant, chocolate and cedary oak. Fat, lush and silky, with atypical volume to the flavors of plum, tobacco and chocolate. Wonderfully supple, plump wine with layers of flavor, thoroughly sweet tannins and compelling aromatic persistence. Today the wine's substantial baby fat is masking its impressive underlying power. According to Borie, this 2005 combines the best traits of the chateau's 2003 and 2000.

Tasted blind. Minty top note. Lots of beef. Dry tannins but hugely intense. Lots going on here. Quite a cocktail of activity. Very dry and savoury and minerally. Almost painfully austere on the end! (JR)

'The growing season was exceptionally dry and sunny with just enough moisture at the right times to nourish the vines. Temperatures were frequently above average, but without heatwave extremes, and the night temperatures in August through October were cool, keeping pH levels in check. Grapes were harvested in picture-perfect conditions. The result was small grapes with perfectly ripened skins, exceptional concentration, and exquisite freshness.' Harvest: 21 September – 6 October. 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot. 18 months in new French oak. 'A magnificent, easy vintage', added Bruno Borie. On their tech sheet they describe it as 'mythic'. Deep garnet. Smells elegant and minerally with refined dark fruit, peppery cigar box. Firm, rich, dense and still so youthful, and fragrant as it opens. Massive but harmonious, rich in fruit and structure and with enough freshness for a magnificent whole. Long finish and many years to go. A marked fruit/oak sweetness on the finish. (JH)

Black cherry, dark chocolate, a few sprigs of mint and long, leathery notes to finish. This is very much in its prime – so satisfying and complete! Fine, floury tannin lifted by just enough acid. A triumph of winemaking and terroir. (RH)
