2000 Chateau Figeac Premier Grand Cru Classe A, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2000
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
% Alcohol: 13.00

Figeac is a truly extraordinary Bordeaux property for so many reasons. Located to the west of St Emilion - it is actually closer to Libourne than to the hilltop town which gives the appellation its name - it is one of the few large-scale, high quality properties in the area which remains in family ownership. Figeac is also planted unlike any other estate in the area with its (loose) proportions of a third each of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. These latter vines are perfectly suited to the patches of gravel soils which are spread across the property and since the estate moved to micro-vinification, allowing true plot-by-plot picking and production, the complexity of the terroir has been exhibited more clearly than ever before. The de Manoncourts have invested heavily and General Manager Frederic Faye continues to impress us with his skill, good humour and above all, his capacity to get the very best out of this unique piece of St Emilion terroir.

Tasting Notes and Scores

97 DR

Dense ruby in colour, slight bricking around the edges. Beautifully supple tannins, hints of black truffle, cocoa dusting. Signature Figeac finesse. Bright and vivid, feels like the slow-moving 2000 is now beginning to rival the legendary 2001 Figeac, and reaching that point where you can't decide if you want to slow down and savour every sip or rev up and drink it down in a few gulps. From double magnum. 100% new oak.

This has far more intrigue on the nose than the 2005 with the Cabernet Franc relishing this propitious growing season. Savoury fruits, a touch of fig and earth although perhaps it could just do with a little more harmony. The palate is very elegant with grainy tannins, firm grip with a tinge of espresso become more evident towards the finish. This is just beginning to develop character but it needs another decade. But great potential. Drink now-2020+. Tasted December 2007.

Overt rosemary, bay and tobacco notes lead the way, backed by dark fig and steeped black currant fruit flavors at the core. The finish is loamy-edged, with a serious tug of earth. There's nice flesh and density here, though I like where this is now, rather than wanting to wait too much longer.--Blind 2000 Bordeaux retrospective (December 2015). Full ruby-red. Wild, expressive aromas of black raspberry, cedar, lead pencil, mocha, coffee and animal fur. Fat, silky and lush yet dry; a thick, round Figeac with impressive volume. Even the merlot in 2000 showed solid structure. Like the 2001, this shows an intriguing burnt note. Finishes with big but suave tannins and lingering notes of cherry, chocolate and black olive. The richest of these three vintages by a wide margin. (A second bottle of the 2000 showed more oak spice, less volume and a distinctly peppery aspect, however.)

Tasted at the Château Figeac vertical at the property. It is some years since I last tasted the 2000 Figeac. There is a valid argument that it is being eclipsed by the 2001, but it is still a fine Saint Emilion. The nose is clean and fresh with strong graphite aromas, very Left Bank in style with black truffle and smoky notes developing. The palate is masculine and rather austere at first, though I notice that it gains fleshiness in the glass. It is nicely weighted, but does not quite deliver the sensuality or joie-de-vivre of the 2001 (which is actually like a lot of millennial Bordeaux). Let's see how it matures over the next few years, but my money would be on the 2001. Tasted June 2015. NM
