Tasting Notes and Scores
The white of the vintage is the 2016 Haut Brion Blanc, a Sauvignon-dominated blend that includes just under 30% Sémillon. Amazingly deep and rich, yet vibrant at the same time, it offers an exotic, liquid rock-like minerality as well as notes of citrus zest, crushed limes, and white flowers. It’s unquestionably one of the most concentrated, powerful wines out there, yet it still just glides across the palate with flawless integration of its fruit and acidity. It needs short-term cellaring and will keep for 20-30 years if you’re so inclined. - jebdunnuck.com, February 2019

Layered with a round and rich texture and body. Full and flavorful. Lots of dried-apple and pineapple character. Very long finish. Exotic and ripe. We will see which is better. - March 2017

Restrained on the nose, but giving out some deep mineral flinty, smoky characters underneath the bright citrus. Closed. A rush of tropical fruit, opulent and vibrant, gives way to fresh citrus and freshly cut grass, chalky minerality. The tropical note just comes back on the finish. - April 2017

This takes a beat before getting going, then kicks in with elegance and power. It has been in bottle for a year at this point and is still reticent, slowly revealing white pepper and lemon zest notes, building through slate walls to a mineral, saline finish, layering up over the palate to make its presence felt. 2017 will be the first vintage that Diam corks are used as closures, so 2016 is the last year for natural corks for the whites. - decanter.com, Jane Anson, December 2018

The 2016 Haut-Brion Blanc is rich, ample and captivatingly beautiful. A wine that fills every corner of the palate with its intensity and breadth, the 2016 represents one the few peaks of true excellence among the whites of the year. The blend is 69% Sauvignon and 31% Sémillon, but above all else, Haut-Brion Blanc is a wine of place. That is especially evident when tasting it next to the La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, which is so clearly Sauvignon Blanc-dominated, whereas the Haut-Brion Blanc maintains a great deal of its own personality and signatures. In the glass, the 2016 is voluptuous, racy and impossible to resist. - vinous.com, April 2017

The 2016 Haut-Brion Blanc is a very good white from the first growth, though I have never found it to be the very best. It has a well-defined bouquet of Golden Delicious apple, orange peel and light citrus notes, but it is not the epitome of complexity, and it lacks a little mineralité. The palate is very well balanced with a fine thread of acidity; there is an impression of tension and salinity here. Light Williams pear and white peach notes emerge toward the persistent finish. Excellent. - vinous.com, Jan 2019
