Chateau Haut-Brion Premier Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2004
Region: Bordeaux, Pessac-Leognan
% Alcohol: 13.00

One of the four original 1st Growths in the 1855 classification (along with Lafite, Margaux and Latour) Haut Brion has always ranked as one of the most desirable wines in the world. Its story, since 1855, has been quite incredible including a series of disasters that plagued the vineyards during the second half of the 19th century and occupation by German forces during WWII. In fact, during the war, Haut Brion served as a rest home for Luftwaffe pilots. Owned by the Dillon family since 1934, the style of Haut Brion has changed over the years. During the '50s and early '60s the wines were rich, earthy and almost sweet, giving way to a much leaner, simplistic style of claret from 1966 to 1974. Since 1975 we have witnessed a return to the richer more complex style which many people know and love today. Haut Brion is stylistically unique amongst the 1st Growths and has always been very much the connoisseurs choice, often undervalued when compared to its illustrious piers in Pauillac and Margaux. The credit must duly be given the incredible work carried out by Jean Delmas who administered Haut Brion from 1961-2003, producing some of the greatest wines in living memory. His son, Jean-Philippe Delmas, has since picked up the baton and continues to carry on with his father's great work; beginning with the astonishing 2005, Haut Brion have hardly put a foot wrong achieving multiple 100-point scores from across the leading critics.

Tasting Notes and Scores

95 WS

Wonderful aromas of dried flowers, currant, berries and mineral. Full-bodied, yet reserved and refined. Lovely texture, with a pure silk feel. Seamless and beautiful. Great length. Even better than from barrel. James Suckling

Mature brick-edged dark red; sweet, refined, early bouquet, subtly gravelly, very nice already; supple, graceful, delicately tannin textured middleweight wine; a gentle, easy, flowing flavour, fresh, fragrant, mouthcoating and fine; not the fruit core appeal and juiciness of the La Mission, but with a greater aromatic complexity. Drinkable already, but real harmony and bouquet yet to come. Now – 2030+ [M Schuster March 2014]

Shines as an admirable effort in a challenging year. Dark garnet in colour, it could be more forward on the initial attack, but with time the fruit aromas open up on the palate. The texture is light and lacks punch and depth, but the balance is there. Not one for long ageing, but it is drinking well now. Merlot dominates the blend (61% of the total), and the wine was aged in 76% new casks (bottled in June 2006). Drinking Window: 2023 - 2045

It has been a few years since I last tasted the 2004 Haut-Brion. Now at 12 years of age, it retains its deep color. The bouquet is "pleasant" if not as complex as the 2004 Latour, yet it's possibly just biding its time as it gradually opens with black fruit, black olive, even a touch of mint that might dupe you into thinking Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied and very harmonious, almost caressing thanks to the Merlot lending that velvety texture. The second half changes tack, the Cabernet nudging the Merlot off the stage and delivering a more structured, possibly foursquare finish that is linear and correct. It is an excellent wine for the vintage although it will always be overshadowed by the 2005 inter alia. Maybe more personality just needs to develop? Tasted September 2016. - The Wine Advocate 229, Feb 2017

Reserved, stoic, discreetly styled wine, better on the nose, with its smoky edge to the red currants, tobacco leaf, cedar, and leaf, than on the tight, crisp, red berry palate. Lovers of old-school classic vintages will probably like this more than I did. Drink from 2023-2040. Tasted Dec 2022

-Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide No 7

The dark plum/ruby-hued 2004 Haut-Brion exhibits a noble, discrete, smoky bouquet revealing notions of plum liqueur, black currants, sweet cherries, and subtle earth. In addition to its aromatic complexity, this medium-bodied effort reveals classic elegance and delicacy as well as sweet fruit in the mouth and a long finish. Give this streamlined, civilized wine 2-4 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 20-25 years. It is amazingly similar to Haut-Brion’s 1999.

Deep brick-tinged garnet. Gentle and complex aromas that are hard to describe discretely. Overall there's a slightly leafy note but there's a lovely warm, spicy sweetness, a little earthy and still a trace of red fruits. More austere on the palate than I expected. Refined and refreshing. The tannins quite dry at the very end. JH
