Tasting Notes and Scores

My Right Bank wine of the vintage, along with Ausone (St-Emilion). 56% Cabernet Franc, 44% Merlot. Depth, complexity and finesse. Marked by the Cabernet Franc. Very fine tannins. Beautiful texture. Finesse and disguised power. Considerable ageing potential. Fresh, long, persistent finish. Drinking Window 2024 - 2050

Bloody, iron tang, floral, touches of orange and graphite and iris – so Lafleur. Crystalline and so pure, smooth and supple, this has excellent energy and focus with the most delicious lift and juiciness. Not heavy or weighted at all but this has structure and persistence with elements of layering which gives distinction between flavours and textures. I love it. Salty on the finish, ending with a slight chalkiness. Delicious. Pure, charming, effortless.

Concentrated ruby in colour at the 10 year mark, and wow this is good, just mouth-filling black truffle, bilberry, olive tapendade, Cabernet Franc dominant in its floral violet and raspberry leaf curls, standing head and shoulders above most of the Pomerols in the vintage, lord of all it surveys. Has a sense of drama and restraint, then releases a saline juicy finish.

The 2014 Lafleur has a lucid hue. The bouquet bides its time, gradually unfolding with scents of raspberry coulis, blackberry, black truffle and just a faint hint of dark chocolate, all beautifully defined and yet you know it is keeping something in reserve. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin. There is that backbone, which of course you expect with this Pomerol, but also a sense of refinement and poise, a seam of spiciness that develops with time in the glass that prolongs the finish. No, it is not the greatest Lafleur that I have tasted. It's just a really great Pomerol that will give many years of pleasure. NM

The 2014 Lafleur has a tightly wound bouquet with earthy, truffle tinged black fruit, hints of dried blood and black truffle developing with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin encasing a sweet core of candied red fruit. The Merlot is very expressive here and offers more brightness than many of its Pomerol peers, which is unusual for a Pomerol so saturnine in its youth. Just beautiful. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. - vinous.com, March 2018

Tasted blind. Looks and smells very youthful still with cassis and a leafy quality. Tannins are very fine but slightly drying yet the wine remains elegant and polished if not plush. (JH)

That is fantastic on the nose. OMG! Exuberant aromas of lavender, tobacco, cigar box, violets and slice plums. Medium to full body. It just builds on the palate and goes on forever. Speechless. Such finesse and beauty. Just a hint of spices. What a glorious, hyper-classic wine. Coup de foudre!
