Chateau La Fleur-Petrus, Pomerol

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2012
Region: Bordeaux, Pomerol

Chateau La Fleur-Petrus was Jean-Pierre Moueix’s very first estate acquisition in 1950 (13 years after establishing his merchant business in Libourne). With just shy of 9ha sandwiched between Chateaux Lafleur and Petrus on the prized Plateau de Pomerol M. Moueix quite evidently knew a good thing when he saw it. The wines issuing from this hallowed terroir have never been better and certainly its price remains considerably more friendly than either of its namesake properties!

Tasting Notes and Scores

96 AG

Exotic and explosive in the glass, the 2012 La Fleur-Pétrus is another standout in the Moueix portfolio. Graphite, smoke, incense and plum are some of the notes that open up in this exquisite bouquet. The 2012 possesses remarkable depth and intensity for the year. Gravel, smoke, sage, wild flowers, game and tobacco add the final shades of nuance on a powerful, virile finish endowed with remarkable salinity and freshness from the Cabernet Franc. Jan 2016

A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2012 La Fleur-Petrus is a stunning Pomerol that’s certainly up in the top tier of the vintage. Incredibly perfumed and floral, with notions of black cherries, raspberries, dried flowers, forest floor, saddle leather, and cedar, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, beautiful balance, ripe tannin, and an ethereal, elegant texture that carries ample flavor authority with no sensation of weight. Drink this incredibly fine, elegant, and nuanced beauty any time over the coming three decades. March 2019

Christian Moueix and his winemaking team have done a remarkable job over the last decade to bring La Fleur-Petrus into the league of Pomerol’s titans. Now a worthy rival to Trotanoy, Petrus, La Fleur, Le Gay, La Violette and Vieux Chateau Certan, the dense ruby/purple 2012 La Fleur-Petrus has beautiful silky tannins, and stunning rich black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, stunning purity, symmetry and overall character and complexity. This beauty should drink well for another 15-20 years. The final blend is classic – 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. 92-95 points – Robert Parker (Wine Advocate #218, April 2015)

Tighter tannins than many in Pomerol this is built to last, with layers of liquorice, black chocolate, power and punch. You'll find more nuance in more recent vintages of La Fleur-Pétrus, but this is enjoyable, fleshy with ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit and displaying huge confidence. A great choice for signature Pomerol over the next decade or more. Harvest September 24 and October 11 - and a key vintage at the property, as this was the first vintage with the addition of land from Ch Guillot and Providence, and the removal of vines that were incorporated into sibling estate Lagrange. 50% new oak. Truffle, licorice and dark cherry aromas create the perfume. The wine is rich, full bodied and concentrated with all the right stuff. That is, if you like fresh, sweet, juicy, ripe, sweet plums and black cherries, coupled with freshness and sensuous, silky, velvet textures. This could get even better as it develops. May 2015

One of the successes in this vintage, with alluring bay and tobacco notes already emerging from the core of lush plum, raspberry and red licorice flavors. There's a nice thread of plum pit and charcoal for spine, with alluring earth tones through the finish. —Non-blind La Fleur-Pétrus vertical (December 2015). Best from 2018 through 2028. 2,833 cases made. – James Molesworth (WineSpectator.com, 2016)

Very perfumed with stones, dark berries, mushrooms and hints of wet earth and nutmeg shell. Full body, chewy tannins and fantastic fruit and purity. Needs time to come together but a fabulous wine for the vintage. – jamessuckling.com, Feb 2015

Fresh and fragrant to smell; a rich middleweight wine, with a fine grained tannin; sweet and fresh to taste, gently fleshy, long and subtly spicy across the palate, and with a long, gentle, sweet fruited finish. Not a big La Fleur Petrus, but a fine one. 2018-30 [M.Schuster, Bordeaux Mar/Apr 2013]

(90% Merlot/10% Cabernet Franc)
Intense and complex, dense and juicy with good firm structure and alcohol. Almost tropical in the nose with oodles of ripe black fruits. One of the brightest of the Moueix offering, it's a serious bottle: refreshing, polished and concentrated at the same time. Very good.

The 2012 La Fleur-Pétrus has a well defined nose: red fruit mixed with leather and undergrowth, wild heather and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant, quite fine tannins that frame the spicy red fruit, silky smooth with a caressing, sensual and rather irony finish. The second bottle at Bordeaux Index demonstrated a little more dryness on the finish. Tasted blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. Sept 2022

Tasted blind. Dark crimson. Not much nose. But very polished and succulent. So much interesting juice! Some herbs and masses of fruit. Pure pleasure. Some Cabernet Franc evident here. Really appetising. Just finishes with a little inkiness. Drink: 2019-2030. – jancisrobinson.com, Jan 2016
