Tasting Notes and Scores

91-93 JL

Deep in color, the wine shows its bouquet of black currants, smoke, licorice, wet earth and oak notes easily. Lush, fleshy, ripe, and round, the fruit is fleshy, sweet and richly textured, finishing with loads of ripe blackberry notes on the mid-palate and finish. Clearly, this is a step up in class since the new owners took over. 91-93

The 2020 La Tour de Mons, matured in 25% new oak, has quite a perfumed bouquet with brambly red fruit, pressed rose petal, touches of potpourri, all well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with ample tannins, fine acidity, red plum, cranberry and strawberry laced with black pepper and just a touch of tobacco. There is just a subtle chalky texture on the finish. Lovely.

90-92 JD

A young and unevolved barrel sample, with lots of toasty oak as well as rich red and black fruits, cedarwood, graphite, and loamy earth, the 2020 Château La Tour De Mons is medium-bodied and has firm tannins, good mid-palate density, and just an overall classic, straight, focused style that is very much of the vintage.

The 2020 La Tour de Mons is a soft, fruity Margaux that should drink well with minimal cellaring. Super-ripe dark cherry, cedar, tobacco, licorice, spice and earthy notes all open in the glass, framed by hearty, burly tannins that are likely to remain rustic in feel. Let's see how this turns out in bottle.

83-85 LP

Composed of 57% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 La Tour de Mons is aging in French oak barrels, 30% new. The alcohol is 13%. Deep purple-black colored, it needs a little coaxing to reveal cedary notions over a core of black cherries, fresh blackberries and stewed plums, with touches of wild mushrooms and tree bark. The medium-bodied palate is a little thin, with a chewy frame and rather short, flat finish.
