1981 Chateau Latour Premier Cru Classe, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 1981
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac
% Alcohol: 14.99

One of the original 1st Growths in 1855, Latour's reputation for making consistently outstanding wine continues to this day. The consistency of its wines can, to an extent, be attributed to the fact that, since 1670, the estate has only ever had 3 owners. Originally acquired by the Segur family, Latour remained in the hands of their heirs until 1963 when the estate came under British ownership with acclaimed wine writers Hugh Johnson and Harry Waugh serving as advisors. Since 1993, the estate has been under the ownership of Francois Pinault, a lifelong fan of the wines of Latour who, since taking charge, has overseen a string of incredible vintages. Since Pinault took the helm, Latour has been characterised by extraordinary levels of concentration, richness, and structure. Most significantly, following the 2011 vintage Latour opted out of the traditional En Primeur system with the intention of cellaring their wines themselves and only releasing each vintage as and when they believe it is ready. Hence the reason you will find fewer recent vintages of Latour offered than the other leading Bordeaux properties.

Tasting Notes and Scores

88 RP

The 1981 tastes remarkably velvety and supple for such a young Latour--not that this is a malevolent occurrence--because the excellence, complexity, and richness of the wine are still present. The color is dark ruby, the bouquet offers plenty of ripe cassis and spicy oak, and the flavor is generous, silky, moderately tannic, and long in the finish. This Latour may turn out to be similar to the 1971.

A stiff and upright wine. Medium red color with an amber edge. Attractive aromas of black truffles, berries and cigar tobacco. Medium-bodied, with firm tannins and a slightly dry finish.--Latour vertical. JS

The 1981 Latour is a wine that have encountered on three occasions previously. It has a rather lean and herbaceous nose, fully mature and missing the vigor I expect from a First Growth. The palate is marked by rather rustic tannin with modest amounts of leafy black fruit, but the bottom line is that the 1981 is a rather dull and staid Latour that, whilst perfectly drinkable, is inevitably dwarfed by the following vintage. Tasted at a private dinner in London.

Sweet and sour on the nose. Extremely fresh and pure with marked acidity. This wine cried out for food and went well with our beef carpaccio. In fact with its tannin and acidity, its structure is not unlike that of an Italian red – a superior Chianti perhaps.
