Tasting Notes and Scores
Tasted at Chateau Ausone. The bouquet on the Chapelle d’Ausone is very well defined with intense blackberry, cassis and seaweed aromas, plus a ferrous note in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with a pure, ripe, sensual entry and to be honest, you are just smitten from here on in. Beautifully balanced with perfectly pitched acidity – this is an outstanding, sophisticated Chapelle d’Ausone. Tasted November 2012.

A blend of 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, this has a ripe, well defined nose of raspberry, dark plum and a touch of cedar wood. There is very fine lift here. The palate is very smooth and silky on the entry, gentle but insistent grip with structured, tannic, slightly gritty but very focused entry. Very pure-as usual. Drink 2013-2020+ Tasted March 2011.

There is an amazing depth of berries, orange blossom and minerals. Wet earth too. Full body, with a super velvety palate of super polished tannins. It deep and soulful. It goes for minutes on the palate. This is very structured and muscular. Nearly always one of my favorite second wines. Try after 2018.

The second wine of Ausone again doesn’t taste like a second wine! It’s too good!! Dense and exciting, with blackberry, blueberry and currants. Full and powerful. It takes off at the end. The precision and pinpointed dark fruit character is fantastic.

St Emilion (33% harvest, 14.5%) [65M/25CF/10CS] Dense, classy nose of black fruit and minerals; very well balanced in a firmly tannic mould, an abundance of fruit within the tannic frame; long, and sweet, and refined; you notice the alcoholic warmth as a touch of potency, and this seems to harden the tannins a bit, but fine sweet persistence. A fine, if fairly austere, long term second wine. 2025-40+ [M.Schuster, Bordeaux Mar/Apr 2011]

The 2010 Chapelle Ausone is a very elegant wine with rather tart acids, this second wine of Ausone is medium-bodied, has dark raspberry and blueberry fruit notes with some hints of wet stones. Pure, nicely textured, but rather backward, this wine needs further bottle age. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030.
One of the other perfectionist, compulsive producers in St.-Emilion is Alain Vauthier, who is now capably assisted by his daughter.

2010 Chapelle d'Ausone: The fact that this second wine is so remarkable tells readers just how stupendous the grand vin must be. The dense purple-hued 2010 Chapelle d'Ausone offers a perfumed nose of blue, red and black fruits, licorice, incense and crushed rocks. Deep, full-bodied, round and generous, this wine will offer magnificent drinking over the next 20-25+ years.
