1995 Chateau Lynch-Bages 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 1995
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac
% Alcohol: 13.00

Is there a wine anywhere in the world that can boast the global affection and recognition of Château Lynch Bages? Once known as the “poor man’s Mouton” this iconic Pauillac now plays second fiddle to no one, residing as it does in the finest collections and on the most coveted wine lists in the world. Lynch Bages is surely one of the most underrated chateaux when it comes to the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines, belying its fifth growth status and producing outstanding wines year on year. Under the Cazes family, first Jean-Michel and now his son Jean-Charles, the estate has seen massive investment - most notably a huge, modern new winemaking facility - and the rewards have been duly reaped. Stylistically, Lynch Bages is quintessential Pauillac, highly consistent in quality, with the trademark regional Cabernet Sauvignon character of black fruit, pencil shavings and leather.

Tasting Notes and Scores

94 WS

A wine that continues to improve with age. Shows loads of ripe plum, almost prune, with hints of vanilla and mineral. Full, chewy and tight. Still needs time.--Lynch-Bages non-blind vertical.

Wine Spectator

The 1995 Lynch-Bages has a well-defined bouquet with intense blackberry, undergrowth and tobacco scents. Bold and lifted, this is a nose that wants to make an impression. The palate has more concentration and tannic backbone than others in this era. Dark berry fruit mixes with cola and black pepper, and tobacco comes through toward the finish with an austere, grippy finish. This would benefit from decanting for a couple of hours and is a bit of a bruiser, though not without charm. Tasted blind at the Lynch Bages vertical at the château. July 2023

Like many 1995 Bordeaux wines, this remains tough, tannic and austere. At close to 17 years of age, even when this wine becomes fully mature, it will always have a tannic, masculine, cassis and green flavored personality. This wine will probably please tasters who enjoy more, old school, traditional styled Bordeaux wines. Oct 2011

A dense ruby/purple hue is accompanied by reticent, restrained aromatics suggesting earth, herbs and subtle fruit. The wine hits the palate with a brutal, tannic overlay, but behind that are impressive levels of black and red fruits. As is the case with many 1995s, the wine’s structural components still dominate, which makes one wonder if these cuvees will ever shed enough tannin to be charming and enjoyable to drink. Certainly depth, weight and richness are all present, but the tannins remain elevated and somewhat foreboding.

(76% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, 7% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 5.43 g/l total acidity; 12.9% alcohol): Deep ruby with a touch of garnet at the rim. Expressive nose melds red cherry, dried herbs, incense and sandalwood, along with an obvious note of oaky torrefaction. Very smooth on entry, with good balance to its red and black fruit and earthy underbrush flavors. Turns a little tough and lacks complexity on the nutty finish, which hints at iodine and smoke. Transparent ruby. Classic ripe Pauillac with a bit of spicy evolution. Still with a bit of tannin and freshness. Lots of fun for claret lovers now. JR 11/06/2019
