Tasting Notes and Scores

95-97 JL

Opaque in color, the wine quickly shows off its licorice, blackberry liqueur, flowers, chocolate, espresso and black cherry nose. Full-bodied, rich, opulent and concentrated, the velvety finish is lush and long. Give it 7-9 years to allow the oak to integrate and for the wine to better come together and it will be a hedonistic treat for at least 2 decades or longer. 95-97

Another rock star of a Saint-Emilion, the 2020 Château Magrez Fombrauge just about jumps from the glass with a great perfume of assorted cassis and darker berry fruits as well spice and floral aromatics. It’s certainly ripe, yet it never goes over the top, and it holds onto the sense of freshness and vibrancy that’s common in 2020. With medium to full-bodied richness, velvety tannins, and terrific depth, it plays in the upper echelons in the vintage and is well worth seeking out. I think it will offer plenty of pleasure in its youth yet also cruise in the cellar.

Lots of blackberry, smoked-oak, pine-needle and inkwell aromas. It’s medium-to full-bodied with round, creamy tannins that are nicely integrated into the pretty, ripe fruit. Attractive acidity, too. Juicy, savory finish. Chewy at the end.

This has a muscular swagger to the tannins, bitter chocolate, spice box and crushed stone with a slate-textured grip and juice through the finish. Confident, makes its presence felt and offers plenty of pleasure. A little bitter on the closing beats, but well balanced by dried rosemary and freshly milled black pepper. 70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc planted, no details of the vintage blend.

The 2020 Magrez Fombrauge Blanc has good intensity on the nose, featuring citrus peel, Japanese yuzu and light apricot notes, quite well defined. The balanced palate offers a slightly honeyed opening, good acidity and quite an effervescent finish. Delightful. -vinous.com
