1994 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Premier Cru Classe, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 1994
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac
% Alcohol: 13.00

After some 50 years of lobbying by the late, great Baron Philippe de Rothschild; Mouton was finally elevated to 1st Growth status in 1973. Armed with serious aspirations, Baron Philippe de Rothschild purchased the property in 1922 from his great grandfather and immediately set about making significant changes to the estate. In 1924 he introduced Chateau bottling, in 1926 he built the property's famous grand chai and, in 1933, he bought the neighbouring property of Chateau d'Armailhac. Along with his aspirations for the estate, Baron Philippe was also armed with some serious commercial nous and, in 1945, he began commissioning artists to do an annual painting depicted at the top of the label. With artists such as Picasso, Warhol, and Prince Charles contributing, these unique labels have added to the collectability of Mouton. Chateau Mouton Rothschild spans around 90 hectares of vines just a little way north west of the village of Pauillac, planted on extremely poor gravel-dominated soils which in truth would support almost no other crops. The gravel mix of pebbles and stones, which lies to a depth of several metres over a clay-limestone base, allows perfect natural drainage while maintaining some heat capture and sun reflection off the stones to aid ripening of the berries. The topography of the land, which is a series of small hillocks generally less than 40 metres in height, influences both this natural drainage and also sun exposure to the benefit of the vineyards. Interestingly enough the name “Mouton’ does not relate to the animal but to two old French terms – ‘motte’ or ‘mothon’ meaning rise or mound. The run from 2010 to 2019 shows Mouton right back its very best and the future looks extremely exciting.

Tasting Notes and Scores

92 JL

Ready to drink, the wine is simple, fresh, bright, and on the red fruit side with its strawberry, cherry and cassis personality. The wine is not overly complex and a it’s a little bit lean and green on the palate. This is what my friends from across the pond call a proper, classic luncheon claret. Feb 2020

After less than persuasive performances in two potentially great years, 1989 and 1990, Mouton-Rothschild appears to have settled down, producing fine efforts in recent vintages, culminating with the enormously promising, unquestionably profound 1995. The 1994 appears to be the finest Mouton-Rothschild made following the 1986 and before the 1995's conception. The wine exhibits a dense, saturated purple color, followed by a classic Mouton nose of sweet black fruits intermingled with smoke, pain grillee, spice, and cedar. Medium to full-bodied, with outstanding concentration, a layered feel, plenty of tannin, and rich, concentrated fruit, this wine is similar to the fine 1988. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025. By the way, the Dutch artist, Appel, has created a gorgeous label for the 1994. Although Mouton-Rothschild can be among the most inconsistent first-growths, when this estate gets everything right, the wine can be as compelling as any produced in Bordeaux. Feb 1997

Dark-colored, with intense aromas of blackberries, tar and spice, and toasted oak notes as well. Full-bodied, with very silky tannins and a chewy, ripe fruit-accented finish. An impressive Mouton.

This is still youthful in appearance with dark ruby color. It sets an excellent example for the 1994 vintage with a spicy, toasty nose showing lots of black currants and tar. It's full-bodied, refined and chewy. Drink or hold. Nov 2015

Tasted at 28-50 restaurant at the 1994 dinner. Like many 1994s, I feel that many of the top tier Clarets have nudged past their peaks and the First Growths are no exception. The nose is still fragrant with blackberry, mint, cassis and a touch of pastilles. It is surprisingly primal when compared to the likes of Las-Cases. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity and a pleasurable fleshy core. As before, it does not quite have the complexity of vintages produced in the noughties, although there is a pert little touch of fresh blueberry on the finish. Fine. Drink now-2020. Tasted November 2011.

The great Michael Broadbent MW noted 'this is what my friends from across the pond would describe as a proper, classic luncheon claret'. Elegant and lighter on the palate, the fruit character here is more subdued with a cool, leafy edge. Toasty wood and spice notes in evidence but the acidity is more dominant than with the other vintages. Feels just a bit stringy and lean. At its best. Harvested 19 September to 1 October. 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot. Drinking Window: 2021 - 2021
